Shively Scores First Bloomington Speedway Feature Win
Hamstra & Arthur Win Too

BLOOMINGTON, IN (April 24, 2004) - Although there had been a lot of rain around this week and the skies were overcast at race time, Mike Miles actually had to add water to the track Friday afternoon to get it ready for the cars that would assault it on Friday night. The racing was great all night long; and the final feature was flagged at 10:30 PM.

In addition to the action on the track, the fans were treated to interviews of IRL drivers Ed Carpenter and Alex Barron For Carpenter, it was a return to his roots. He did a lot of racing on Bloomington Speedway and tracks like Bloomington when he was progressing through the USAC ranks. For Barron, it was a new experience. He was particularly impressed that the young drivers performed so well.

As usual on a HARF Night, Dave Black, George Seats, and crew brought a bunch of appreciative race fans to enjoy dirt track racing at its best.

While the Rodney Reynolds owned Rock Steady Racing 3R knew its way to victory lane, it had never been there with Eric Shively on the button. However, Shively won with the poise that made it appear that he found himself there on a regular basis. He was sixth quick in qualifications which put him on the pole for the start of the feature event. However, Kenny Carmichael who started outside of the first row got past him on the first lap and led the initial circuit. But, on the second lap, Shively took the lead that he would hold until the checkered flags waved.

Shively maintained a comfortable lead for most of the feature while Carmichael, Jared Fox, Kevin Briscoe and Bryan Clauson battled for second place through much of the race. Early on 14 year old Bryan Clauson and two time Bloomington Speedway champion Kevin Briscoe waged a spirited battle. Carmichael and Fox waged a similar battle behind Shively.

With Briscoe's experience on the red clay, the fans kept waiting for him to come up through the other front runners to challenge Shively for the win. On the 18th circuit, Briscoe moved into third place and began a battle with Jared Fox for second. However, young Clausen got past Briscoe again on the 21st circuit. As the leaders entered lapped traffic, Briscoe got back past Clauson; and it looked like he might be able to challenge for the win. However, as they cleared lapped traffic Shively began to stretch out his lead again. Briscoe passed Clauson on the 23rd lap and overtook Fox on the white flag lap to take second where he would finish.

Noblesville High School freshman Bryan Clauson was impressive in setting quick time and drove a good solid race. This kid will certainly be one to watch as the season unfolds. He may well be a threat to match Derek Scheffel's feat and win both the championship and the rookie of the year title.

Jared Fox turned in what may well have been his best performance ever on the red clay. There was certainly something for everyone in the sprint car feature.

In preliminary action, Fox, Bobby Stines, and Josh Cunningham won the heat races while Steve Rone took the B feature

Dan Hamstra of Delphi, Ind. is one of the top modified racers nationally; however, he seldom gets the opportunity to race at Bloomington Speedway. However, this week he elected to come South and battle with the great O'Neal Wood Products modified drivers. He pretty much had the field covered last night. He won his heat, the dash, and the feature event. Last week's feature winner, 15 year old Jeff Bland, Jr., finished second in the dash to start outside of the front row. Bland took the lead when the green flag waved; however, he only managed to lead the first two circuits before Hamstra took the point. Hamstra never looked back; however, if he had, he would have seen young Bland driving a very strong race. Bland kept it close for the whole feature; and, had Hamstra made a mistake, Bland would have won his second feature in a row. However, Hamstra didn't make that mistake and Bland had to settle for second. As a consolation prize, Bland took a bigger lead in the points home with him.

Gary Barrow finished third ahead of Clint DeMoss, J.P. Hume, Brady Short, Matt Boknecht, John DeMoss, Steve Ott, and Rodney Harris, Jr.

Hamstra, Bland, and Clint DeMoss won the O'Neal Wood Products heats while Steve Ott took the "B" feature.

In the Tire & Wheel Center super stock division, Kevin Arthur absolutely had the Tire & Wheel Center super stock competition covered. He won his heat, the dash, and checked out on the field in the feature event. Although there was plenty of good racing back in the pack, barring some kind of catastrophe, nobody was going to interfere with Kevin Arthur's bid for his first feature win on the red clay.

Mike Jones, Greg Kendall, Lee Hobbs, and Ben DuBois all battled to see who would wind up second. Former Tire and Wheel Center super stock champion Kendall held off Lee Hobbs to take second ahead of DuBois, Jones, Chris Deweese, Danny Harris, Michael Purtlebaugh, Randy Howe, and Kent Robinson. In preliminary action Kevin Arthur, Jones, and Kendall took the heat races while Hamstra prevailed in the dash.
