BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 28, 2003) - Another chapter in the history of Bloomington Speedway is in the books. The weatherman washed away our first attempt to run the 15th Annual Sheldon Kinser Memorial; but last night's race was certainly worth the wait. When Kevin Briscoe has to make a last lap pass in the "B" feature to take the final transfer spot by inches, you know that yov've had an awesome race. There were 51 sprints, 28 O'Neal Wood Products modifieds, and 32 Tire & Wheel Center super stocks in the pits. And, the hillside was full of cheering fans. As usual at Bloomington Speedway, everyone got their money's worth.

SPRINT CARS -

Jay Drake, Keith Kunz' regular, driver was in Virginia last night for a USAC Silver Crown race; but the Keith Kunz Motorsports crew had some pit passes left from an earlier rainout, so Keith asked USAC/SCRA star Cory Kruseman if he felt like going racing. Both Kruseman and the Keith Kunz Motorsports team were up to the task. Although Kruseman was one of the last to qualify, he was still eighth quick. He won his heat race to earn a transfer to the feature. 2002 Bloomington Speedway rookie of the year Tim Spindler finished second to Kruseman in the heat. These two cars are used to being close together as Spindler shares shop space with the Kunz team in their Columbus race shop. The final transfer spot from that heat went to three time Bloomington Speedway champion Derek Scheffel. When you have that much talent in one heat, you know that you are going to have a show that will be talked about for a long, long time.

When the green flag dropped to start the Sheldon Kinser Memorial, Kevin "Pup" Huntley charged into the lead; and many of his hometown fans were, no doubt, hoping for a repeat of last week's feature win. However, Brian Gerster was holding on in the Law Brothers car; and Scheffel and Kruseman were coming. On the ninth lap Kruseman passed Scheffel to take third and, the following lap, he passed Gerster for second. Three laps later he took the lead that he would never relinquish.

When Kruseman took the point he began to stretch out his lead; however, Scheffel wasn't done. He knows the Bloomington Speedway red clay as well as anyone. Besides, Scheffel was still looking for his first Sheldon Kinser Memorial win. Just past halfway Scheffel got past Huntley; and, as the leaders got into lapped traffic, the distance between Kruseman and Scheffel began to shrink. Scheffel was all over Kruseman; but he couldn't find the way around. In like manner Kruseman wasn't having any luck passing the lapped cars in front of him. In fact all 18 cars still running when the checkered flag waved had completed every lap.

Scheffel had to settle for second trailed by Huntley, Kevin Briscoe, Dick Gaines II, Jon Stanbrough, Brian Gerster, Matt Westfall, and Jerry Coons, Jr.

In preliminary action, Bobby Stines was the fast qualifier, Marc Jessup, Dick Gaines II, Cory Kruseman, Derek Davidson, and A.J. Anderson won the heat races. Jon Stanbrough won the "C" feature while 2003 Purdue University magna cum laude graduate Bobby Stines prevailed in the "B" feature.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS -

Ray Humphrey and Brady Short started side by side on the front row of the O'Neal Wood Products modified feature. Humphrey took the initial lead; and he was able hold it for four laps. However, on the fifth circuit, Short got past him to take the point; and he led until the checkered flags waved. The win was Short's first on the Bloomington Speedway red clay.

During the early going, Humphrey, and Shelby Miles waged a pretty good battle for second place before Humphrey finally locked it up. Matt Bex turned in a solid third place performance.

Once again, Jeff Bland, Jr. had a good night coming from mid pack to finish fourth. Greg Deckard, Clint DeMoss, Brad Erwin, J.P. Hume, J.P. Karpowicz, and Shelby Miles rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, Brady Short, Ray Humphrey, and Shelby Miles won the heat races while Humphrey took the dash. Rodney Harris, Jr. prevailed in the "B" feature.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS -

Ben DuBois pretty much dominated Tire & Wheel Center super stock competition. You would never know that he was in route to his first feature win. He won his heat, the dash, and led the feature flag to flag. While DuBois won at all of the key markers, it wasn't really that easy. Jack Frye came from his 12th place starting position to second in the initial 12 laps. From that point on, DuBois had all he wanted to do holding off Frye.

Mickey Hines drove to a third place finish trailed by last week's feature winner, Chris Hillman, Michael Vest, Brad Cummings, Chris Deweese, Danny Harris, Justin Bex, and Rick Wolsifer.

DuBois, Deweese, Randy Howe, and Wolsifer took the heat races while Terry Arthur prevailed in the "B" feature.
