BLOOMINGTON, IN (May 31, 2003) - Another chapter in the history of Bloomington Speedway is in the books. The skies were overcast; and rain threatened. However, the weatherman smiled on competitors and fans. We were treated to a great evening of racing without a drop of rain falling upon us. In fact, most of them were probably home before the rains started. The drivers and the track officials joined forces to get the racing over before 11:00 PM.

SPRINT CARS -

For the second week in a row, Kevin Briscoe beat the odds. If he were to win his fourth feature of the season at Bloomington Speedway, he and his Roberts Racing team were going to have to be on the top of their game. And, a little luck wouldn't hurt anything either. However, the smart money is never placed against Briscoe on the red clay. He was fourth quick in qualifications; but that didn't matter. In accordance with track rules he would have to start tenth. Briscoe suspected that he would need a little luck with yellow flags; but if he got it he knew that he could win his fourth Bloomington Speedway feature and the third in the Danny Roberts owned beautiful black 21R.

Bloomington's Jared Fox was fifth quick in qualifications which put him on the outside of the front row for the start of the evening's feature event. When the green flag dropped he beat pole-sitter Kenny Carmichael in the drag race to the finish line at the end of the first lap. However, Ed Hassler got crossed up and collected Bill Boggs with Boggs getting on his lid. Shawn Krockenberger apparently hooked the cushion and flipped himself. The resulting red flag reset the field and would give Fox the opportunity to scramble for the lead again.

When the race restarted, Jared again took the point; but Dick Gaines II was coming. At the end of the second lap Gaines was in second place and was obviously on a charge to get past Fox and get his first feature win of the season at Bloomington Speedway.

Kenny Carmichael and Brisco had moved up to join the battle with Fox and Gaines by the seventh lap when the yellow flag flew for Derek Scheffel who had touched wheels with Kent Christian and spun. Scheffel had to go to the tail. Scheffel's bid for victory took a serious hit. Fox continued to hold the lead; and it looked as if the battle being waged by Gaines, Briscoe, and Carmichael might slow them just enough for Fox to hold on and take his first Bloomington Speedway feature win. However, Fox, who had driven a near perfect race, seemed to hook the inside cushion and shot off of track on the 23rd lap. It looked like he would demolish his car against the guard rail that protects the pit area. But he got the car stopped in time. Only a radius rod and his pride seemed to be damaged.

Gaines, Briscoe, and Carmichael were left with a three lap dash to the checkered flag; but Kevin Thomas was coming hard. He had a long way to go to catch them; but you can never count Thomas as out. Briscoe took the lead and left Gaines to try to hold off Carmichael and Thomas to salvage a second. Carmichael slipped past Gaines to take second; and Dick was forced to settle for third.

Thomas and Hud Cone both drove great races to come from tail to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Derek Scheffel showed his championship form charging from the tail to finish sixth in the 18 laps after his spin.

Jason Knoke turned in another solid performance finishing seventh trailed by Kent Christian, Justin Marvel, and Bobby Stines.

In preliminary action, Gaines, Fox, Danny Holtsclaw, and Jon Sciscoe won the heat races while Kris Deckard won the "B" feature.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS -

For the second week in a row Ray Humphrey had the field covered as he won his heat the dash and led the feature flag to flag. Humphrey will join Kevin Briscoe in having to start mid-pack next week.

Shelby Miles finished second and came up just a little short in his bid for the feature win. Clint DeMoss came home third trailed by Matt Bex and J.P. Karpowicz.

Jeff Bland, Jr. showed what he was made of last night.. He got tangled up with Matt Boknecht and other cars at the start of his heat race. He road back to the pits on the hook with a lot of work to do before he would be ready for the "B" feature. He ran a strong "B" feature and came home second. Bland charged from 17th place to a strong sixth place finish. Brady Short finished seventh ahead of Joey Baker, Cullen Goodman, and Greg Deckard.

In preliminary action, Humphrey, Cramer, and Bex won the heats while Joey Baker took the "B" feature.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS -

Lee Hobbs is a hard man to beat on the Bloomington Speedway red clay. And, Friday night he was especially tough. In fact, Hobbs led every super stock lap that he ran Friday night in the heat, the dash, and the feature. Jeremy Hines came from the third row to finish a strong second. Defending Tire & Wheel Center super stock champion Greg Kendall came home third trailed by Danny Harris, Chris Deweese, Jack Frye, Ben DuBois, Mel Bigham, Randy Howe, and Steve Hollars.

In preliminary action, Harris, Hobbs, and Jeremy Stierwalt won the heat races while Mel Bigham won the "B" feature.
