Greenfield, IN -- Although the customary yellow rookie flag flew from the back of his cage, Cameron Dodson proved he is no rookie behind the wheel of an asphalt winged sprint car coming from the last starting position on the grid to finish second Saturday night in the 30 lap A-main. The remarkable performance was before a capacity crowd at Auto City Speedway, Flint, MI for the season-opening event of the Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints.

Dodson drives the bright yellow and red No. 50M for RAM Engineering owned by Dick Myers. Rick Ferguson serves as the crew chief. 2005 will mark the first full season for the 16-year-old Greenfield Central High School student in the asphalt series for 410 winged sprint cars competing for Rookie of the Year honors. Association rules require a rookie to start in the back of the field their first night of competition to be evaluated by officials prior to being allowed to start in the spots they have earned through qualifying and race results.

Dodson posted the 19th quickest time of the 27 entries, plagued by an engine sputter that reared its head when the car was pushed off for hotlaps. The problem was diagnosed as a fuel pickup problem and quickly repaired.

Starting ninth (last in the field) in his eight-lap heat race, Dodson quickly set about the task of securing a starting position in the A-main. With the top-five finishing positions transferred, Dodson took the checkered flag in third.

At the drop of the feature, Dodson was on a mission. Starting on the front row were 2004 AVSS co-champions Jason Blonde and Bill Tyler. A stout field of competitors dotted the field including Troy Underwood, Hank Lawler, Dennis Craft and Tommy Fedewa.

The youngster picked his way toward the front, running in fourth when the races' only caution flew on the 28th lap of the 30-lap race. The yellow was the result of the cars of Underwood, running in sixth, and Fedewa, running third spun in separate incidents. Dodson lined up third in the running order, right on the back bumper of Craft who was holding down second but six lapped cars separated leader Blonde from second place.

By the time the checkered flew, Dodson had disposed of Craft for second and passed all six lapped cars to finish second. Both the KSE Hard Charger Award and the Owens Petroleum Rookie of the Race were awarded to Dodson following his amazing performance.

"It didn't matter where I needed to go on the track," Dodson said. "Where ever I pointed the car, it went. I had a blast tonight. Running against drivers of the caliber in the AVSS makes me a better driver and I am thrilled to have the opportunity. It has been a great weekend.

On Friday, the Cam's Racing No. 37 team headed back to Attica Raceway Park for a night of mud-slinging winged 410 dirt sprint car action.

Dodson was faced with a stellar field of cars including defending All Stars champion, Chad Kemenah, Danny Smith, Jeremy Campbell, Dean Jacobs and Randy Hannigan.

Dodson started on the pole of his eight-lap heat race and easily sprinted away for the win. The victory netted him the outside front row starting position for the 28-lap A-main.

At the drop of the green flag, Dodson jumped into the lead, ahead of pole sitter Cody Geldart, previous Attica champions Byron Reed and John Ivy.

Ivy got under Dodson on lap three for the lead and the pair held the top spots for over half the race. Reed used lapped traffic to take second from Dodson and then used the same strategy to take the lead from Ivy and win the race.

"I had an awesome car at Attica," Dodson said. "Dutch (Mike Dutcher, interim crew chief) did an awesome job getting the car hooked up tonight. We really had a good time. It was a great race with a lot of fast cars."
