Joey Aguilar Wins first Sprint Car Feature at Auburndale. By Larry Vergon
Auburndale, FL: Joey Aguilar made his Sprint Car debut at Auburndale Speedway four years ago when the TBARA made their last visit to the tight, quarter mile oval. One of the largest crowds of the season saw him make a triumphant return, as he swept his heat race and the 25 lap feature Saturday night. Aguilar started on the pole, as the cars were lined up by club points, and led all the way for an emotional victory in Norm Huntley's "Brand X" chassised machine. Aguilar's win was not a 'gimmee' as former TBARA, now USAC racer, Dave Steele flew home to Florida for some "recreational" racing in one of the GMS Motorsports team cars and drove from seventh at the green to second, ready to take advantage of any mistake the young racer might make in the closing laps. Larry Tyler kept the pressure on Aguilar as Steele was making his way toward the front, grudgingly giving up second place to Steele with less than ten laps to go. Tyler took the Tyler Racing entry to Victory Lane in third, veteran Stan Butler was fourth in the other GMS entry, and Brad Davis took fifth in the Ron Davis owned sprinter. The other heat race was won by Davis.
Paul Gibbs won his second Street Stock feature of the season in the 25 lap event. Gibbs also won from the pole, but had to survive some contact during the hotly contested race to keep the lead and take the checkered flag as the winner. Robert Hight, subbing for brother James, who was slightly injured three weeks ago, was driving the same car he won the points championship in last year, and brought it home in second place. Jason Bennet drove from a twelfth starting position to third, followed by points leader James Wright III, up from nineteenth, and Billy Jones, who started ninth. Heat race winners were Gibbs and Chuck Randolph.
There was ALOT of passing going on in the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature. Mike Rudder came from seventeenth at the green to take the point on lap nine, and led the remaining laps for his seventh feature win of the season. Michael Seeright drove to second from a fifteenth starting position, and Jay Kaminski took third from a fourteenth place start. Eugene Davidson took the green in sixteenth and finished fourth, followed by Wayne Weaver, who had started twelfth. Heat wins went to Dusty Robinson and Randy Storer.
Lots of passing in the V8 Pure Stock feature also, which was a 20 lap event this week, with Daniel Clough winning his fourth feature of the season from the outside of the fourth row. Jason Todd started right behind Clough in the fifth row and stayed right behind Clough all the way, for a second place finish. Bob Gorsuch came from sixteenth to finish third, followed by Greg Bacon, who lined up beside Gorsuch at the green. Willie Lacey came home fifth after taking the green in seventeenth. Todd and Josh Haranda took the heat race wins.
Not to be outdone by the other divisions, in 4 Cylinder Pure Stock, Matt Craig started seventh and won his second feature of the season in the 15 lap event. Scott Taylor, sporting a new paint scheme, was second after starting back in eleventh, and Chris Narramore, with a new paint scheme, and a new number on the side of the car, came home third after a seventeenth place start. Randy King, proving the value of a good roll cage with door bars, survived a broadside hit in the driver's door to finished fourth, up from tenth at the green. Timmy McKenzie took the green in thirteenth and drove to a fifth place finish. The heat races went to George Gorham Jr. and Taylor.
The Dwarf Cars returned to Auburndale Speedway, with Allen Davis winning in a '34 Ford Coupe. Steve Tregear, in a '35 Ford Coupe, led from the pole for most of the way, but it appeared he may have overheated his tires as he was battling a loose condition through the turns and gave up the point to Davis late in the race. Bill Burback brought the '33 Pontiac pickup bodied racer home third, followed by John Godwin in a '32 Ford Coupe, and Jim Harrison in a '34 Ford Sedan. Heat races went to Don Hess Jr. in his '34 Ford Vicky and Harrison.
Next Saturday, July 31th, Auburndale will provide racing action with the Southern Pro Trucks, Limited Late Model Sportsman, Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Pure Stock V-8's; and Four Cylinder Pure Stocks..
