Wright rolls to victory lane in ASCS Gulf South Region opener.

ASCS - TULSA, Okla. (April 5, 2003) - Gary Wright bolted into the lead on the opening round and went on to win Saturday night's 25-lap main event in the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region season opener at Fast Track Motorplex in Chatham, LA.

Defending ASCS Gulf South Region champion Kelly Angelette led the field to the green flag, but it was second row starter Wright charging into the lead before the completion of the first lap. Wright proceeded to set the pace throughout, collecting the $2,000 winner's share aboard his Salina-powered Maxim sprinter.

Travis Rilat made several bids for the lead over the course of the race before settling for second, with Angelette claiming the show position. Todd Johnson topped a torrid battle for fourth, beating Chris Sweeney and Jimmy Brooks to the line. A.J. Weaver was seventh, with Brandon Berryman the top finishing rookie contender in eighth. Rick Behr and Greg Rilat completed the top ten.

Wright, Berryman and Behr claimed heat race victories for the 23-car field, with Nebraska-transplant Scottie Robertson topping the B Feature.
