O'Reilly ASCoT -- The Month Ahead
TULSA, Okla. (May 31, 2007) -- The O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series covers some additional new ground in a month of June that is highlighted by the First Annual ASCS Northern Plains Speedweek.
And taking on the Midwest and Northern Plains Regional shoes will add some spice to a $50,000 championship points chase that heated up over the month of May.
Three-time and reigning series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, opened up a 97-point lead on the strength of 14 consecutive top-five feature finishes, only to have much of that lead dwindle away when he had to use a provisional starting position at Susquehanna Speedway Park on May 24.
A night later, Louisiana's Jason Johnson, also in the thick of the championship points chase, surrendered much of the ground he had gained the previous night when a crash while dicing for second at Virginia Motor Speedway sent a woozy Johnson pitside early.
The benefactor over the month of May that included the East Coast Swing was Oklahoma City's Wayne Johnson, who finished no lower then seventh in a half-dozen feature events and has finished fourth or better in the last five.
As a result, Wayne Johnson has climbed to within 28 points of Gary Wright. Jason Johnson enters the month of June just 63 points off Wright's pace, while Travis Rilat picked off a pair of May wins to move to fourth in points, 117 points off the lead pace. Despite suffering three consecutive DNF's to wrap up the East Coast Swing, Oklahoma's Darren Stewart still rounds out the top five in points.
The Brodix Rookie of the Year battle continues to be an intense three-way battle between Foster Landon, Andy Shouse and Chris Schmelzle. Landon currently holds a 99-point advantage over Shouse.
Seventeen different drivers competed in all four ASCS East Coast Swing events, with 59 drivers competing in at least one event. For the year, 204 different drivers have competed in at least one O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National event with an average car count of 42.3 cars per event.
