O'Reilly ASCoT Rolls into I-30 Speedway this Saturday
TULSA, Okla. (July 25, 2006) -- Ready for one last tune-up before Knoxville's 360 Nationals, the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series rolls into Little Rock's I-30 Speedway in Arkansas this Saturday night for the first time this season.
The series was set to invade I-30 Speedway back on April 29, only to have torrential downpours interrupt the event. Now, in the heart of summer, the nation's premier touring series is ready for its first 2006 outing atop Little Rock's high-banked, 0x00bc-mile clay oval.
And leading the way into the event despite scoring just two feature victories in the opening 21 events of the season is two-time and defending series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, a driver that has enjoyed a disproportionate amount of success at I-30 Speedway in recent years.
With an ASCS National Tour best 106 career victories, Wright has recorded nine of those victories at I-30 Speedway with his most recent one in July of 2005. Wright prepped for Saturday's outing with a triumph in weekly action at I-30 Speedway last weekend.
Wright enters the weekend a mere 44 points ahead of Jason Johnson in the series $50,000 championship points chase. From Eunice, LA, Johnson, who earned the number one ranking in the Mid-Season National Sprint Car Poll, has recorded 14 overall ASCS wins in 2006 including seven in O'Reilly ASCoT competition.
A pair of Rookie of the Year contenders are ranked third and fourth, both within 100 points of the leader, including Warsaw, Missouri's Jesse Hockett and Broken Arrow's Nick Smith. Hockett has posted one feature win this year, while Smith, who led points much of the way until a difficult Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek, owns a pair of victories.
Former ASCS National champion Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, enters Saturday's card ranked fifth, exactly 100 markers off Wright's lead pace, with the balance of the top ten including Rookie of the Year contender and current American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region point leader Sean McClelland (Collinsville, OK), 2005 series runner-up and current ASCS Mid-South Region point leader Darren Stewart (Bixby, OK), 14-year-old Trey Robb (Newcastle, OK), Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Sunnyvale, TX) and Tony Bruce, Jr. (Liberal, KS).
The O'Reilly ASCoT traveling troops will face a tough contingent of local contenders led by three-time ASCS National champion Tim Crawley and Pete Butler among others.
Saturday's action at I-30 Speedway gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
I-30 Speedway is located seven miles southwest of Little Rock off I-30 Exit 126. For more information, contact the track at 501-455-4567.
