O'Reilly ASCoT Fireworks in Store with Weekend Double!
TULSA, Okla. (June 30, 2008) -- The O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series is set to celebrate the Independence Day weekend in grand style with a pair of pivotal events on the docket, serving as the final prelude to the upcoming 16th Annual Toyota Tundra ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek.
This Friday night, July 4, the series makes it second annual stop at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS. Then on Saturday night, July 5, it's on to Lake Ozark Speedway near Eldon, MO, for the second time this season.
The O'Reilly ASCoT National forces will be joined by the ASCS Midwest Regional troops on Friday night at Lakeside, while the Winged Outlaw Warriors will take in both nights of action.
The battle for the $50,000 ASCS National championship continues to heat up with each passing night, as only 22 markers separate four-time and reigning champion Gary Wright from Louisiana's Jason Johnson through 16 nights of action.
With one triumph thus far in 2008 to run his career total to 120 ASCS National Tour triumphs, Wright's consistency, including top-ten finishes in all 16 feature events has put him in the driver's seat.
But "The Ragin' Cajun", Jason Johnson, has been busy making up ground since using a provisional in March, closing the gap to just 22 markers on the strength of six series wins, including two out of three in the just-completed ASCS Northern Swing.
Oklahoma City native Wayne Johnson, the 2000 ASCS National champion, enters the weekend ranked third, just 86 points out of the lead. Another pair of past series champions, Zach Chappell (Talala, OK) and Garry Lee Maier (Cimarron, KS), round out the current top five in points.
Twenty-year-old Eric Baldaccini of Keller, TX, solidified his status as leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender with a pair of top-five finishes in South Dakota over the past week, climbing to sixth in series points.
Past ASCS National Rookie of the Year Nick Smith (Broken Arrow, OK), enters the weekend ranked seventh, with other top ASCoT National contenders expected for the weekend including Kenneth Walker (Sapulpa, OK), 18-year-old Jack Dover (Springfield, NE), 17-year-old Kathryne Minter (Bedford, TX), Gary Taylor (Sapulpa, OK), Aaron Berryhill (Broken Arrow, OK) and Chris Tarrant (Greenville, TX).
Missouri's Brian Brown is out to the early lead in ASCS Midwest Region points over reigning series champion Natalie Sather and Jack Dover, while series rookie contender Jonathan Cornell holds a slim lead over perennial champion Randy Martin in Winged Outlaw Warriors points.
After this weekend's pair of events, the O'Reilly ASCoT National series embarks upon the 16th Annual Toyota Tundra ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek, including six nights of action at six different tracks from July 11 to July 19.
