MECHANICSBURG, PA., 8/28/98 - It was like the Donnie Kreitz Jr. of old Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway as he used his familiar path around the bottom of the track to notch his 39th career win a the historic Mechanicsburg half-mile against the All Star Circuit of Champions and moved him into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time win list at the Grove behind Lynn Paxton (43 wins) and Smokey Snellbaker and Keith Kauffman (both with 41 wins).

Kreitz stuck to what worked through his previous four Williams Grove championship seasons and finally found his way under the high-flying race-long leader Sean Michael on the 17th lap and then cruised the rest of the way for his fifth career AllStar win. Kreitz became the 15th different All Star winner this season.

"Tonight was a great night for the Kreitz racing team...The guys have been working really hard for me," said Kreitz. "The Eagle Chassis was working good tonight, as was the Davey Brown Chevrolet engine. We qualified in the first six spots which gave us a good starting spot. Everything just went picture perfect tonight."

ButlerBuilt Hot Seat Pole sitter Michael grabbed the lead at the drop of the green to start the 30 lap A-Main while Kreitz, who started outside the front row, dove under Joey Saldana in the first and second turns of the first lap to move into second place.

Michael began to open up some daylight on Kreitz over the next few laps and by the fifth lap had a full second between them. But the leaders headed into lapped traffic on the eighth lap with Michael heading to his familiar spot on the top of the track while Kreitz marched on from the bottom. Kreitz pulled along side Michael heading down the frontstretch to complete the eighth lap, but pulled away on the backstretch as he cleared the slower cars.

But Kreitz was relentless and pulled along side Michael down the frontstretch once again on the 10th lap in lapped traffic, only to have Michael pull ahead exiting the second turn.

The hectic action slowed on the 12th lap as the caution flag waved for Dean Jacobs who slowed to a stop exiting the fourth turn.

On the restart Michael once again headed to the high-side with Kreitz determined on the bottom with the pair racing nose-to-tail over the next four laps until the 17th lap when the race's final caution came out for James Chesson who had stopped on the backstretch.

On the restart Kreitz dove hard into the first turn and slid under Michael and exited the turn with the lead.

"I was really getting worried there for a while," said Kreitz on his race for the lead with Michael. "I was giving it all it had at the start because I wanted to get the lead right away but Sean was running really good and I was just waiting for the top to go away and I starting thinking the bottom might go away first because it was getting kind of slippery down there."

"There at the end the lapped cars were all running at the bottom where I wanted to run," Kreitz added . "When I had to go around them I was kind of worried they were going to close in on us...but we were lucky enough to hang on."

From there Kreitz easily pulled away over the remaining laps to pick up his sixth overall win of 1998 and took home the $4,000 top prize in the process. Coming on strong at the end was Kenny Jacobs, who came from his seventh starting position and passed Michael for the runner-up spot on the 28th lap, but finished well behind Kreitz at the checkered.

"Donnie's got this place figured out and he kicked our butt," said Jacobs with a smile afterwards. "You don't know how bad I wanted to win one here...this use to be my second home and it's been a long time since I won here at Williams Grove."

Michael settled for a hard fought third place finish when the dust had cleared.

"We were good at the beginning but got loose at the end," said Michael. "We also got beat by experience."

Billy Pauch turned in an incredible ride from his 19th starting position to finish fourth and was followed by Cris Eash in fifth. Williams Grove point leader Fred Rahmer finished sixth and was followed by Greg Hodnett in seventh. Keith Kauffman came from the last row to finish eighth and was followed by Lance Dewease and Frankie Kerr in ninth and 10th respectively. Heats were won by Kreitz, Dewease, Kenny Jacobs and Pauch. Rahmer made a last-lap, last-turn pass of Dewease to win the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash, while Saldana won the United Expressline B-Main. Fast time in time trials was set by Hodnett over the 41-car field with a one-lap time of 17.719 seconds.
