Williams Grove Speedway releases busy 2003 slate of events, World of Outlaws ink seven dates, All Stars make return for two.
12/27/02, Mechanicsburg, PA - Known throughout the sprint car world for hosting weekly programs of the best racing anywhere, Williams Grove Speedway has announced its 2003 schedule of events. The finalized itinerary consists of 37 dates for the 410 powered sprint cars as sponsored by Cindy Rowe Paintless Dent Repair and a dozen appearances by the Middleswarth Potato Chips 358 Sprints.
In it's 65th year of existence, the historic half-mile oval will kick off its 62nd season of professional automobile racing on Sunday afternoon, February 23 with the Cindy Rowe Sprint Cars, getting underway at 2 P.M. The season opener will mark the beginning of Rowe's seventh season of involvement at the track. There was no racing at the facility during a three-year period during the early 1940's.
Aside from the season lidlifter, five additional Sunday afternoon programs are scheduled before the speedway switches to its usual Friday evening time slot on April 4. The season will conclude with the 3rd Annual Fall Fest on Saturday, October 11 when both the 410 and 358 sprints will compete along with Super Sportsman and Limited Late Models.
Several high profile, high-dollar events will highlight the season for the 410 powered sprint car division. Five of these events will make up the 2003 Diamond Series, yielding a series title.
Celebrating its 21st year, the 30-lap Early Bird Championship will kickoff the series on April 11.
The All Star Circuit of Champions sprints will return to the Grove for the first time since 1999 on two occasions, May 2 and July 11. Fred Rahmer proved victorious during the ASCoC last appearance.
June 2 finds the speedway hosting Twin 20's for the sprints and the fifth and final event of the series will be the 21st Annual Jack Gunn Memorial Triple 20's on August 29, crowning the 2003 Diamond Series champion.
The World of Outlaws make their first of seven scheduled appearances at Williams Grove on May 15 & 16 for the two-day Spring Fling. The best in the sprint car business then return to the Cumberland County oval for the three-day Summer Nationals on July 24, 25 & 26. The WoO will complete their 2003 Grove swing when they compete in the 41st Annual National Open activities on October 3 & 4.
Other special events for the 410's include the 15th Annual, 30-lap, $10,000 to win Mitch Smith Memorial on July 4 as part of Pennsylvania Speedweek highlighted by fireworks. After a one-year absence, the Daryl Gohn Memorial is scheduled to return on June 6.
Sponsored by Middleswarth Potato Chips in 2003, the 358-powered sprint cars are slated to make 12 appearances during the upcoming season. The Middleswarth Chips Sprint Cars are scheduled for a feature only in their season debut on March 16.
Special events for the Middleswarth sprints include extra distance championships on June 27 and September 12. The division will also compete in the Dave's Lawn Care Dash For Cash on July 18.
The winged Super Sportsman have inked seven dates on the schedule from March through October and the full size Late Model stock cars make their lone appearance on April 4. Also contracted to compete are the ARDC Midgets on May 9 and the URC Sprints on August 15. The August 15 program will not be a point event for 410 Sprints.
Williams Grove will host always popular Enduro competition on May 4, June 15, August 3 and September 5.
Promotional nights on this years schedule include York County Racing Club discount nights on May 30 and August 22 and The Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown will be part of the June 6 program. Camera and Autograph Nights are slated for May 23 and on August 8 when Auto Locator supports the action. June 27 will be Middleswarth Potato Chips night and Kids Night will be August 1.
