BARBERVILLE, FL - Put Joey Saldana on the front row starting spot for a feature, and he’s tough to beat. That was the case Friday night at Volusia Speedway Park in the All Star sprint 20-lap feature. Saldana had to hold off a determined Terry McCarl to earn his first feature win of the 2001 season. "I started up front with these guys and it sure helps," Saldana understated in victory lane, crediting his success to his crew for changing to a new engine from the one used the prior evening. James Chesson was on the pole for the start in the Barker Bus No. 22c with Saldana alongside in his own No. 17. Lance Dewease in the Harz Racing No. 88 and Terry McCarl in the Holbrook 8H were in the next row, followed by Todd Gracey’s Ken Cooper 25 and quick timer Ron Laney’s own No. 52. Saldana quickly took command and was lapping the back of the field by lap five when second place Chesson spun, bringing out a caution flag. Lap eight saw another misfortune for the Chesson team when brother PJ Chesson flipped his No. 76. Saldana held command for the restart with McCarl second and Dewease in third. Lap 12 was unlucky for defending All Star champ Kenny Jacobs when his machine flipped, sailing out of the ballpark in turns three and four. McCarl kept close on the restart, and was side-by-side with Saldana on lap 14. McCarl actually led laps 15 and 16, but Saldana snuck back into the lead on lap 17, leading the final three circuits. McCarl rode under the checkered second, with Dewease, still feeling sick, riding home third ahead of eighth starter Danny Lasoski. Laney faded to fifth with Rodney Duncan doing a masterful job of coming from 15th to sixth in the end in Al Harrison’s No. 22. Gracey soldiered home seventh with last row starter Tim Shaffer eighth ahead of Greg Hodnett and Thursday winner Dale Blaney. The K-T Equipment heat went to Craig Dollansky, the JB Enterprise Racing Products heat to Billy Pauch, the Crown Battery Heat to Brian Ellenberger and the Engler Machine & Tool heat went to Lasoski with the fifth heat to Jeff Shepard. Danny Smith won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main while Todd Gracey won the B Main. Time Trials: 1. Ronald Laney, Laney 52, 13.593; 2. Todd Gracey, Cooper 25, 13.655; 3.
