TULSA, OK. (August 17, 2002) - Jeff Shepard took advantage of a lap 10 restart to win his third All Stars vs. O'Reilly NCRA Thunder Through the Plains Sprint Car A feature before a crowd of 4,341 Saturday at Tulsa Speedway.
Kelly Kinser had just inherited the lead from Kenny Jacobs when Shepard rocketed to the high side in turn three following a lap 10 restart. Shepard came out of turn four with the lead and pulled away over the final 20 laps to record his third victory in four nights.
A better setup late in the race gave Shepard the extra acceleration he needed to pass Kinser.
"When these cars are full of fuel they are tight in the beginning and I just kind of ride around there most of the time and get myself in striking distance," Shepard said from victory lane. "We were in striking distance and once the fuel load gets low I can race harder.
"Earlier we would go in there and roll up and roll up. On that restart I was able to keep the car underneath me and keep a lot of speed up the backstretch. That is how we passed him."
Kenny Jacobs roared off the outside front row into the early lead with Kinser and Shepard in second and third. The race was only three laps old when Jason Johnson and Paul McMahan hooked up and McMahan came to a stop in turn four.
Jacobs continued to lead till rear end problems forced him to stop on the track bringing out another yellow. Kinser took his turn at the lead but it was short lived as Shepard made his move to the front.
Kinser held on to second just ahead of NCRA point leader Brooke Tatnell in third. Travis Rilat charged to fourth and Danny Smith was fifth.
Rilat made an impressive run toward the front after starting 14th. Rilat was getting faster as the race progressed and was in ninth on lap 25, eighth on lap 26 then passed Smith for fourth on the final lap.
The race was stopped for the final time on lap 27 when B main winner Travis Whitney flipped in turn two.
The Crown Battery heat fell to Jan Howard, the B&B Products heat went to Greg Wilson, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Zach Chappell and the TP Wings heat fell to Shepard. The United Aluminum Window Sales & Consulting B Main went to Travis Whitney while Kenny Jacobs captured the Haulmark Dash.
In the B main Whitney took the lead on the start and pulled away to post the win. Dean Jacobs finished second after battling with Travis Mize. Mize passed Jacobs after a lap seven restart but Jacobs drove back around on lap 10. Mize finished third and Bruce Robenalt rounded out the top four.
