FRANKLIN, PA .... For the sixth year in a row, Tri-City Speedway will play host to some of sprint car racing's top stars as the All Star Circuit of Champions compete at the half-mile Venango County oval on Sunday May 5th.
"We have a long history with the All Stars," noted Tri-City Co-Promoter Mike Graham, "and we're looking forward to continuing that tradition."
When the dormant track reopened in 1996, Tri-City was quickly added to the Western Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek schedule. Over the years, those All Star events were won by Dale Blaney (1996-97), Jeff Shepard (1998-99) and Greg Wilson (2001). The 2000 race was rained out. In addition, Joey Saldana captured an All Star race in May, 1998.
"Speedweek will not return in 2002," said Graham. "We're disappointed it will not happen, but the May date fits perfectly into our schedule. It will run in conjunction with an event at Lincoln (Pa.) Speedway on Saturday night."
Defending and four-time All Star Champion Kenny Jacobs of Holmesville, Ohio, will lead the All Star contingent into Tri-City. Other challengers should include 2002 All Star runnerup Chad Kemenah and fellow Buckeye State racers Rodney Duncan, Dean Jacobs, Byron Reed and many more. Central Pennsylvania racers like Lance Dewease and Fred Rahmer may also venture to the northwest to compete at Tri-City.
Tri-City's 2002 NorthPointe Automotive Super Sprint Champion Scott Bonnell of Fairview, Pa., will top the list of local racers to compete along with former track champ Jimmy Hawley, Ed Lynch Jr., Jarod Larson, Chad Hill, Jason Jacoby, Mark Cassella and Brent Covell. Joining the All Stars will be the Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Senior Series with such racers as Bill Wheeling, Don Gamble, Terry Wheeler and Tim Lowry.
Gates open will open at 4 p.m. and racing will start at 6 p.m. on May 5th. It is expected that All Star time trials will start the show. Grandstand admission prices will be released in the immediate future. For more information, please contact the track office at (814) 473-4038.
