HARTFORD, OH -- The "Cajun Sensation" Jason Johnson loves Sharon Speedway. He utilized the high groove Sunday night to dominate the Haulmark All Star sprint car 40 lap feature. Johnson made an outstanding slide-job pass of race leader Lance Dewease on lap 19 and led the rest of the way for the $5,000 top prize as the All Stars returned to the 3/8 mile oval after a one-year absence. His performance was so dominating he lapped up to the eighth place finisher in winning over Dewease and All Star points leader Chad Kemenah.
Johnson, who drives the Harrison Trucking No. 22 Eagle-Kistler said from victory lane, "There was some moisture on the top, but you had to be careful where you went. It was rough, man, my arms are beat," he said of the high groove. The he complimented his crew, "After the first red we tightened it up but it was too tight and after the second red we loosened it up and got it a lot better. I have to thank the HTI crew, Al and Elaine and my crew chief Shane Wisbon. We hurt a motor and had to change it after the dash. They did a great job tonight."
Dewease started on the pole with Mark Keegan alongside and Dean Jacobs and Johnson in row two with Phil Gressman and Jimmy Hawley in row three. Dewease jumped out to the initial lead with Jacobs second and Keegan third. On lap two disaster struck when Fred Rahmer and Gressman touched wheels coming off turn four with Gressman flipping and ending up hung up in the turn four catch fence atop the guardrail. Gressman was not injured. After the red flag cleanup, Dewease again was on top over Keegan, Johnson and Hawley with Jacobs getting sideways on the backstretch and dropping to fifth before another red a lap later for a Scott Bonnell flip in turn two. A lap later the third red came out when Mark Smith flipped in turn three.
Dewease again jumped out into the lead when the green replaced the red, but a yellow came out on lap four for Keegan smacking the turn one wall after being passed for second by Johnson. Johnson kept chasing Dewease and found Sharon's extra high groove above the cushion where no one else was brave enough to run. He even brushed the turn two wall twice during his charge. By lap 13 Johnson closed right on Dewease and lapped traffic enabled Johnson to pull even closer. Lap 18 saw Johnson get an excellent high run off turn four but he could not make the pass stick, but a lap later he put an excellent slide job coming out of turn four to take the lead from the central Pennsylvania veteran Dewease.
From that point on it was a high speed exhibition by Johnson as he rode the rim of the track at an amazing rate of speed, increasing his lead over Dewease every lap. Dean Jacobs got turned sideways and spun on lap 38, bringing out the final caution of the night. For the restart it was Johnson, a lapped car, then Dewease, Kenny Jacobs, Chad Kemenah and Fred Rahmer. Johnson pulled away once the green fell again, with Dewease second and Kemenah making a last ditch pass coming off four for the checkered to get third by a bumper length over Rahmer. Kinser was fifth after starting 15th, followed by Kenny Jacobs, Byron Reed, Dean Jacobs, Greg Wilson (a lap down) and Hawley.
"He (Johnson) was the better race car tonight. He was pretty fast all night long," Dewease complimented the winner from second. "I came down for a lapped car and he went right by us."
"Kenny (Jacobs) got stuck behind some lapped cars and Rahmer was right there but I had just the right line and it paid off," Kemenah said of his last lap pass for third.
The Crown Battery heat fell to Paul McMahan, the B&B Products heat went to Fred Rahmer, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Chad Kemenah and the TP Wings heat fell to Craig Keel. and won the United Aluminum Window Sales & Consulting B Main. Jimmy Hawley captured the Haulmark Dash. Rob Chaney was the Huggins Cams Fast Time qualifier with a new track record of 12.972 seconds, snapping Johnny Herrera's 2002 mark by .001. Chaney was leading the B Main but popped a tire with two laps to go, thus he missed the A Main transfer. Ed Lynch, Jr. hit the front stretch wall and flipped in time trails when his steering broke. He was not injured but the car was done for the evening.
