HARTFORD, OH - After a disappointing loss Saturday night, Joey Saldana put it all together in the All Star sprint 40-lap feature Sunday night at Sharon Speedway in the 19th annual $65,000 Sharon Nationals. The seventh win of the season for Saldana was worth $10,000 plus $580 in lap money and came in front of a sellout crowd over Greg Hodnett and Paul McMahan. "Greg Hodnett had the fastest car all night," Saldana said afterward. "If he hadn’t broke a nose wing it would have been totally different. I got by him when his wing was broke. This is a big race and I didn’t want Greg to win it two years in a row. Rob Hart and Cathie Barrows just worked real hard tonight. Right at the end I was just spinning really bad on top coming off four so I went back to the bottom and luckily we held on." Saldana’s winning Eagle Chassis utilized Fisher-Chevrolet power, Goodyear Tires and is owned by Steve Mox. Keith Kauffman started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position in the Middleswarth Potato Chips No. 7, with Frankie Kerr alongside. Kauffman took the initial lead with James Chesson in tow up from fourth. Sixth starting Hodnett took third on lap two, then second on lap four by passing Chesson. The first yellow appeared with five laps in the books when sixth place man Lance Dewease stopped on the back chute with a collapsed top wing. Following a caution on the next lap for Ed Lynch Jr.’s magneto failure, Kauffman still led over Hodnett and fifth starter Saldana. On lap nine, Hodnett’s front wing mounts loosened, and his front wing fell down flat, allowing Saldana to slide by in turns three and four for second. The next yellow appeared on lap 11 for Rob Chaney’s front wing laying on the track, with Saldana putting a slide job on Kauffman in turns one and two which did not stick when the green reappeared, but his turn three and four slide move put Saldana on top. When fourth place Chesson stopped on the front stretch on lap 14, the red appeared for a fuel stop. Saldana led when the green replaced the red, with Kauffman still second over Hodnett and McMahan. Now with a fresh nose wing, Hodnett put a slide job on Kauffman for second, and McMahan took third from Kauffman a lap later. Saldana had a half lap lead when he entered lapped traffic at the half way mark of the contest, as he ran the high groove of the half-mile oval. Hodnett closed a bit on Saldana in traffic, but never got close enough to make a move for the lead. On lap 24, Chad Kemenah blew his engine and coasted pitside, dropping him from a fine sixth place effort, leaving the order Saldana, Hodnett, McMahan, Kauffman and Shepard. By lap 29, Saldana had to drop low through turns three and four each lap, allowing the high groove runner Hodnett to erase half of Saldana’s advantage. Saldana had trouble lapping Rodney Duncan, but still held on for the win by five car lengths. Duncan broke his front end on the last lap, and Danny Wood hit the fence and flipped trying to avoid him, making the finish a dual checkered and red flag. So the final rundown was Saldana over Hodnett, McMahan, Shepard and Kauffman. Dean Jacobs was sixth and Kenny Jacobs finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award despite a flat tire on the last lap. Kerr, Sean Keen and Duncan completed the top ten. "The car was good and we were as fast as everyone else," Hodnett recalled. "We wer a little too tight and I kind of blistered my tires. Traffic was the only reason I was catching him (Saldana)." C&B Mushrooms of Avondale, Pa. added $500 to the sprint car purse, $100 each for finishers 6-10. The Southwest Expressline heat went to Jimmy Hawley, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Rodney Duncan, the United Specialties heat went to Paul McMahan and Byron Reed won the United Expressline heat race. Greg Hodnett was the fast qualifier with a new track record of 15.709 seconds and won the other United Expressline heat and the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash. Chad Kemenah was the United Expressline B Main winner and Rod George won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main. Doug Kekich flipped his mount in hot laps, ending his evening. Kasey Kahne hit the wall in his heat when his steering wheel came off, flipping him over the guardrail and into a field next to the parking lot. He was okay, except for a sore knee.
