All Star Pit Notes 4/29/99 - By Scott Hall
ALMA, OH - At the Karshner family speedplant, K-C Raceway Saturday night, the fans paid for an entire seat but used only the edge of it in the feature as winner Kasey Kahne and Rodney Duncan were either nose to tail or side by side for over half the event. Kahne became the sixth different All Star winner at K-C in the past six events there. The heat racing Saturday night at K-C was fast and furious. In fact, the three fastest qualifiers, Jim Nier, Butch Schroeder and Chad Kemenah, failed to transfer through the heats and had to qualify through the B Main. A total of 15 drivers made it to both the All Star shows at Sharon and K-C over the weekend, and most of them should be following the full All Star tour. The group includes Byron Reed, Danny Smith, Kenny Jacobs, Jerrod Hull, Chad Kemenah, Daryl Stimeling, Greg Wilson, Todd Gracey, Phil Gressman, Brian Ellenberger, Frankie Kerr, Rodney Duncan and Kelly Kinser. Jerry Kinser indicated that Kelly will run the majority of the Al l Star tour this season. Also making both shows were Dean Jacobs and Kasey Kahne, who will not be tour regulars this summer, with Kahne running the USAC midget tour and filling in his schedule with winged sprints. *** "Its like driving in a video game," stated sprint car driver Chad Kemenah when asked about his titanium roll cage rock screen. "It was hard getting used to the blue sparks when rocks hit the screen and fly off." Kemenah, who raced in Australia over the winter, is looking forward to the two weeks leading up to the Knoxville Nationals when his Australian car owner is making his first ever stateside visit to watch Kemenah race. Rodney Duncan's car owner, Elaine Harrison, celebrated the anniversary of her 29th birthday at K-C Saturday. IRL driver Sarah Fisher was on hand spectating Saturday at K-C. The new Goodyear tires Kenny Jacobs won with at Sharon were the first compound 25c tires out of the mold with the new Goodyear "footprint". This tire was recently redesigned to better compete with the other brands currently on the market. Mechanic Barry Jackson is back with the Jacobs team, and is trying to make arrangements to wrench for Jacobs for the entire season. At K-C Saturday, the top three finishers were on Hoosier tires. *** At Sharon Speedway, many improvements were noticeable. The most noticeable was relocation of the pits from the infield to outside turns one and two, and the removal of the inside guardrail. And all the drivers complemented the smooth and exceptionally fast racing surface. Trackside announcer Jim Pollock led the crowd in singing the national anthem when the speedway's tape deck malfunctioned. Promoter Max Warnock has cancelled his All Star show originally scheduled at Portsmouth Raceway Park on Sunday, May 28 due to high water on the track surface. His track crew has not had time to work on the speedway yet this spring. The All Stars return to action this Saturday at Lincoln (PA) Speedway and visit Selinsgrove Speedway for the Jack Gunn Memorial this Sunday, May 7.
