ALMA, OH - Butch Schroeder made the right tire choice and used patience to win Round Three in the All Star sprint Ohio Speedweek 30-lap feature Wednesday night at K-C Raceway. For Schroeder, his second career All Star win and first career Ohio Speedweek win came in his own Kistler-Chevrolet powered Maxim on Goodyear 25C tires and was worth $5,000. The event also marked the return to action for two injured drivers, Paul McMahan, who finished second, and Kevin Huntley, who rode home sixth. With 52 cars on hand, it was the best Speedweek car count so far, with three different winners in three events. "We didn’t make many changes all night," Schroeder recalled from victory lane. "Tom Kistler and Jeff Brian did a perfect job of wrenching all night. The way the track was I had to be very patient on the throttle." McMahan, recovering from a broken shoulder, helped his crew assemble a brand new car in the parking lot earlier in the day and said, "It’s great to be back racing, but it was nerve wracking to start in the front row my first time back. My doctor said if I could deal with the pain I could drive. Only after I got out of the car did I have pain," he concluded with a smile. McMahan started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position in the United Expressline U20, with Chad Kemenah alongside in the Jim Harble Gambler, with Schroeder and Kevin Huntley, in the Rick Daugherty Peterbilt machine, next. McMahan led the first three laps with Kemenah in second, then Schroeder got by Kemenah for second on lap four, and closed in on McMahan. Kemenah remained close, however, and got back by Schroeder for second on lap six, with Huntley holding down fourth and Kenny Jacobs fifth after starting sixth. In lapped traffic on lap nine, Kemenah pulled right up to McMahan, but he could not find a way by the leader. Schroeder took over second again with a turn four move on lap 11, and the battle for the lead was on, with Kemenah still third and Huntley and Jacobs battling for fourth. Jacobs ducked under Huntley to secure that spot on lap 14. As the crossed flags came out for the half-way point of the contest, Schroeder drove under McMahan with an low groove move coming off turn four to lead at the flagstand, a lead he would not relinquish as the track surface was rubber laden, making passing very tricky. The next several circuits saw fast and furious action for second among McMahan, Kemenah and Jacobs, with Jacobs taking third from Kemenah in lapped traffic on lap 20 in the non-stop contest. Schroeder pushed his advantage to15 car lengths on an open track with seven laps to go, and won by a half a straightaway as McMahan held off Jacobs’ Eagle chassis for second at the end. "It’s miserable when the track lays rubber down, " Jacobs revealed. "We didn’t make any changes after the dash, we were pretty good then," the current All Star points leader concluded. Mark Keegan started seventh and finished fourth, with Kemenah fifth, Huntley sixth and Saldana finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Byron Reed started eighth and finished there, with 11th starter Kelly Kinser ninth and 14th starting Phil Gressman tenth. The United Expressline heat fell to Jacobs, the Southwest Expressline heat to Dale Blaney, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Randy Kinser and the United Specialties heat went to Dean Jacobs. Brian Carlson won the last chance race with Kemenah the United Expressline B Main winner. Hud Horton won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and K. Jacobs was the fast qualifier and won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash.
