"Little Ricky" Takes Ohio Speedweek Opener at Attica

ATTICA, OH (6-25-06) The tradition of Ohio Sprint Speedweek continued at Attica Raceway Park with a big car count, a large crowd, exciting racing, and surprise visitors that always make things interesting for the week of events. To add to the aura and excitement of Speedweek, this night also included a dominating performance by a young hot shoe they call "Little Ricky" who after last night's performance can call Attica Raceway Park "Sten's House".

At just 18 years of age, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. put on a masterful performance to top the 47 car field that included many of the All Stars, some National Sprint Tour drivers, and the always tough Ohio locals. The native of Olive Branch, MS has the benefit of Andy Potter's expert knowledge turning wrenches for the week and he had the car set up to run anywhere on the speedway.

"They told me the toughest tracks to win at this week would be Attica and Fremont. We brought an Ohio boy (Andy Genzman) in to help us this week...he knows how to get ya' around these tracks and he proved that tonight," said Stenhouse. "I have to thank Pete Grove (from Ohio) and Premier Pallets...he helped us come out here for this. I've been looking forward to racing with this deal for a long time."

Stenhouse held off a late charge by Byron Reed in the Reebar Diecasting #5r as Reed reeled him in through lapped traffic late in the race. A caution on lap 34 left a wide open track in front of Stenhouse on the restart as he motored to victory in front of the capacity crowd with Reed in tow.

"I thought we could have made things interesting those last six laps if the yellow hadn't come out," said Reed, beside his Reebar Diecasting sprinter. "He had a good mechanic with him (Potter) who knows how to get drivers around this track. I have to thank George Gillespie of ProShocks...he helped us a lot gettin this thing figured out."

Greg Wilson charged to the front on the high side like a madman on a mission. Spending most of his time searching for more forward bite with his right rear off the backstretch and on the horse track as he usually does at Attica, Wilson powered his way past a number of competitors and came home 3^rd .

"We were just a tick off on set-up," said Wilson. "But hey, it's pretty neat for a kid from Mississippi to come in to Ohio and win. The good Lord gave us great weather and we put on a heck of a race for the fans. It was a good points night for us...in the big picture we had a good night."

"The Tall Cool One" Dale Blaney finished 4^th and pole sitter Butch Schroeder rounded out the Top 5.

The heats were won by Tim Hunter, Todd Kane, Schroeder, and Wilson. The track was fast and the action was furious all through the heat races and many good teams were forced to run the B or C-mains.

Bryan Scott won the C-main event followed by Paul May, David Harrison, and All Star Rookie of the Year points leader Chad Blonde who all transferred to the B-main.

The University of Northwest Ohio B-main was won by the 2005 Ohio Speedweek Champion Kelly Kinser. The other transfer spots went to Brian Smith, Kevin Huntley, and Danny Smith. The rest loaded up for the night and will get ready for Tuesday night's action.

The Haulmark Dash was action packed with a 6 car battle for points toward a year-end Haulmark Dash Point Fund. Bobby Clark led the charge to the checkered followed by Reed, Wilson, Blaney, Schroeder, and Paul McMahan.

Next up for the All Stars is Tuesday June 27^th at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, OH and then on June 28^th at Sharon, June 29^th at Fremont, June 30^th at Limaland, and July 1^st at Eldora. The June 26^th event at Wayne County Speedway has been cancelled due to a power outage in the area from storms that hit last week.
