BARBERVILLE, FL - Nine new sprint car owner and driver combinations will make their 2001 debuts in the All Star sprint car season opener at Volusia Speedway Park on Thursday night Feb. 8. They are a part of a record 65 Volusia pre-entries from 21 states.
Heading the list is the defending Volusia Speedweeks champion, Danny Lasoski, starting his first full season in the Tony Stewart Motorsports No. 20. Ohioan Dean Jacobs has moved behind the wheel of Jack Elden's No. 22 for this season, and fellow Buckeye John Ivy will be aboard the Scott Lucius No. 32. Phil Gressman makes his debut in the Wise Motorsports No. 97, and Indiana veteran Tom Davies will wheel the No. 711 of owner Fred Sibley.
Although not his permanent ride, Maryland's Jeff Shepard will drive the Rick Daugherty Racing Peterbilt No. 7 in the Florida series and Tim Shaffer out of the Keystone State will campaign his own No. 45 in Florida. Greg Hodnett has secured the Apple Motorsports No. 12 ride for this season, while All Star Rookie-of-the-Year contender Travis Rilat sports a new number and sponsor for 2001, the No. U2 of Warren Johnson's United Specialties.
Also expected to be on hand are many of the All Star regulars, led by defending champion Kenny Jacobs in the Jacobs/Honecker No. 6. Danny Smith in the Smith/John Baker No 4, Kelly Kinser in the Kinser Timer No. 4k, Chad Kemenah in Jim Harble's No. 15k, Brian Ellenberger in his own No. 20, Rodney Duncan in the Harrison Trucking No. 22, Todd Gracey in Ken Cooper's No. 25, Daryl Stimeling in his own No. 30, Jerrod Hull in Guy Webb's No. 51, Greg Wilson in Bob Hampshire's No. 63, Barry Ruble in his own No. 63B and Kevin Huntley in Denny Ashworth's 92.
