ALMA, OH - Dean Jacobs ran off and hid in the All Star sprint 40-lap Gene Smalley Memorial feature Sunday night at K-C Raceway, leading all 40 circuits non-stop in a time of 9 minutes and 40.73 seconds. It was the first win of the season for Jacobs, and came over his elder brother Kenny with Joey Saldana third. Jacobs drove an Eagle Chassis with Gaerte-Chevrolet power, wrenched by Andy Potter and owned by Jr. and Janet Holbrook, riding on Goodyear tires. "The car was excellent. I knew at the start the ledge at the top wouldn’t last the whole race. Then it took rubber in the middle of the racetrack and we found it and we got to the checkered first." Jacobs related. "We needed it bad. We’ve had a bunch of problems lately. But one win takes car of all those problems." Dean Jacobs started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position with Byron Reed alongside. Saldana and Chad Kemenah comprised row two with Kenny Jacobs and Paul McMahan in row three. Dean jumped out into an immediate high groove lead over Kemenah’s Jim Harble owned mount and Saldana’s Mox Stealth with Reed in fourth. Dean stretched out to a huge lead, and by lap four was in heavy traffic on the 3/8 mile high banked oval. Saldana got around Kemenah for second in traffic on lap seven, dropping Kemenah to third. Dean amassed a full straightaway lead by lap nine over Saldana, with Kemenah still third and Kenny now fourth after passing Reed. Kenny took over third from Kemenah on lap 14 and moved right in on Saldana. At the midway point of the high speed contest, Dean was a half a lap ahead of Saldana, who then lost second to Kenny at the end of lap 20. Kenny kept reeling in his brother until Dean found the rubber laden middle groove and moved down there off the top cushion and was able to continue his torrid pace. With 10 laps remaining, Dean almost lost the race by getting impatient behind a pair of lapped cars. He survived a close call, almost running off the edge of the racetrack in turn three. "Brad Furr and someone were racing beside each other and I wanted to get by those guys so bad I ran in there too hard and slid right through the rubber and about dropped her off the edge. You have to take those chances, if you don’t take those chances you get passed," Dean recalled afterward. Dean lost more ground to a hard charging Kenny after the miscue, but still maintained a two lapped car cushion over his brother when the checkered flew. Kenny Jacobs recalled of second in his Barry Jackson wrenched machine, "The track started laying rubber down and were probably better that some of the others. My race car was pretty good at the beginning too. We started sixth and my little brother started on the pole so he should have won it!" Saldana held on for third, with Kemenah fourth and 12th starting Jim Nier fifth. Danny Smith was sixth and Reed finished seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Paul McMahan, Frankie Kerr and Kasey Kahne completed the top ten. With 43 cars on hand, the United Expressline heat fell to Jim Nier, the Southwest Expressline heat to K. Jacobs, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Charlie Fisher and the United Specialties heat went to. won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash with the United Expressline B Main winner. and Paul McMahan was the Red Devil Brakes fast qualifier.
