ROSSBURG, OH - Joey Saldana ran away from Kenny Jacobs in the All Star sprint 30-lap feature Saturday night at Eldora Speedway for his second win of the season and fifth career Eldora series triumph. Saldana had to fight his way through lapped traffic to stretch out a lead over Jacobs, and he was also lucky to avoid a flip by early leader Dean Jacobs. "Kenny Jacobs had a fast car, and my motor wouldnt take off on restarts, but I knew If I could run on that curb in one real hard Id be all right," the winner said. "Id like to thank Steve Mox for providing me an excellent race car and thank Darryl Tate my mechanic, and my wife Shannon for putting up with me." Saldanas mount rode Goodyear tires and utilized Gaerte-Chevy power. Behind runner-up K. Jacobs was Frankie Kerr with a last turn pass for third. In a repeat from the front row of the night before, Dean Jacobs was on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole position with Jeff Shepard alongside in the Les and Linda Stewart Maxim. Jacobs jumped out to an immediate lead in Denny Ashworths Schnee, with fourth starting Saldana diving low into second in the Steve Mox Stealth. Shepard held third for two laps until K. Jacobs moved his Tim Hughes J&J by for third. The leaders entered lapped traffic on lap five, and D. Jacobs drove high around Scott Jones going down the backstretch on lap six. As D. Jacobs tried to thread the needle between Jones and the wall, the pair came together, and D. Jacobs took a hard flip with Jones getting upside down also. Jones, racing with the flu, was okay, and Jacobs, after taking a moment to regain his senses, emerged from his destroyed machine uninjured. He then rode the ambulance to Coldwater Hospital for a quick checkup. "The lapped cars were so much slower," Saldana said of Deans crash. "Dean just picked high and the guy (Jones) decided to go high too. I dove low and luckily they both stayed high when they flipped. It was too close for me." Following the red flag cleanup, the lineup was Saldana, K. Jacobs, Shepard, Ed Lynch, Jr., Butch Schroeder, Kerr and Keith Kauffman. Saldana pulled away from K. Jacobs on the restart, and then another caution appeared on lap eight when seventh runner Kauffman dropped a driveline. As Saldanas motor stumbled on the restart, K. Jacobs dove low and got alongside the leader, but could not pass as they entered turn one. Saldana stretched his margin in the clear, but K. Jacobs pulled up on him in lapped traffic as the laps ticked off. Then lap 23 saw seventh runner Lynch stop on the front apron for the final caution. Saldana had a two lapped car cushion on K. Jacobs for the restart with Shepard third, followed by Kerr, Kevin Huntley and Butch Schroeder. Saldana pulled out to a full straightaway lead again as the final few laps wound down, and the only unanswered question was if Kerr could get by Shepard for third. Well, after Saldana crossed the line a straight ahead of K. Jacobs, Kerr drove high around Shepard exiting turn four to snare third at the finish line. Shepard was fourth with Kevin Huntley fifth. "We just kept getting a little looser and a little looser - and Joey drove a heck of a race," was how Jacobs put it afterward. The United Expressline heat fell to Shepard, the Southwest Expressline heat to D. Jacobs and the Southwest Glass heat was won by Judi Bates. Sarah Fisher scored a popular Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash win, but dropped a valve in the process and couldnt start the feature. Time Trials: 1. Kenny Jacobs, Hughes 94, 13.132; 2.
