GIBSONTON, FL - Jeff Shepard persevered in the All Star sprint 25-lap feature Wednesday night at East Bay Raceway on the opening night of the 23rd annual East Bay Sprint Nationals. The start of the event was plagued by red and yellow flags, but Shepard steered clear of all the incidents to score his first All Star win of the season over Danny Lasoski. "I just bided my time and tried not to spin out a couple of times. We got into a little deal there with Kelly Kinser on the start, it was tight quarters, I didn’t mean to run into him but it happened, that’s racing, I hope he’s not upset about it," Shepard said afterward. His winning Maxim chassis rode on Hoosier tires, utilized Kriner-Chevrolet power, and was sponsored by Miller Brothers Chevrolet, C & B Mushroom Farms, Cat Construction and York Co. Excavating. He also thanked Penske Shocks for the new shocks he’s been testing. Lasoski chased Shepard from lap 11 on, getting by Shepard on the backstretch once on lap 13, but got caught behind a lapped car which allowed Shepard to regain his lead. "I saw him get past me," Shepard recalled. "I just tried to keep a conservative pace, there was nothing I could do about it because I couldn’t change my pace at all. That was the best I was going to get," Shepard added about Lasoski’s charge and pass. Greg Hodnett started third and ended up there, unable to pass Lasoski. Fourth was Lance Dewease, followed by early leader Frankie Kerr. Kerr started on the ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment Hot Seat pole position in Stan Shoff’s J&J with Dewease alongside. On the first attempt at a start, Kurt Winker flipped on the frontstretch and Fred Rahmer flipped in turn two, with Terry McCarl and Jim Moughan also involved. When the green reappeared, Kelly Kinser got sideways in turn one after Shepard tapped him, collecting Gary Wright, who flipped, and then Kenny Jacobs tagged Kinser, turning him over. The third try was a charm for Kerr as he led the first two circuits over Dewease before a pair of cautions, one for a Todd Shaffer spin, then another for a Paul McMahan and Dean Jacobs collision, occurred. Kerr was still on top when the green reappeared on lap three, with Dewease powering by on the high side to lead lap four with Kerr trailing in second and Shepard third after starting fifth. Shepard dove under Kerr for the runner-up spot on lap six, and began closing on Dewease. With lapped traffic approaching by lap 11, Shepard was right on the back bumper of Dewease. They were side by side at the stripe on lap 11, with Shepard moving low under Dewease in turns one and two to lead lap 12. Lasoski followed Shepard by the leader into second, and was right on the leader, making a backstretch pass on lap 13, but the lapped machine of Todd Shaffer pinned him back to second, allowing Shepard to keep the lead. Shepard survived a close encounter lapping Kevin Huntley late in the race, allowing Lasoski to once again close, but Lasoski also had trouble getting past Huntley, allowing Shepard to go on for the win. Joey Saldana startedsSeventh and finished sixth, with Billy Pauch moving from 16th to seventh, earning the "Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven" award. Team-mate Kevin Gobrecht was next, with Bob Felmlee ninth and Danny Smith, restarting last after the first red, coming in tenth. The United Expressline heat fell to Billy Pauch, the Southwest Expressline heat to Jeff Shepard, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Gary Wright, the United Specialties heat went to Rodney Duncan with the fifth heat to Kevin Huntley. Kerr won $1,000 in the Jean Lynch Dash with Rahmer the United Expressline B Main winner. Ronald Laney won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and Danny Lasoski was the Red Devil Brakes fast qualifier. John Bankston hit the turn one wall hard on the start of the C Main and flipped and Kenny Adams flipped in the B. Both were okay.
