Chico Gold Cup and Williams Grove National Open kick off 2003 Kele World Challenge international qualifiers.
CHICO, CALIF. (AUGUST 31, 2002) - The September 5-7 Chico, Calif., Gold Cup Race of Champions at the Silver Dollar Speedway and the September 27-28 Williams Grove (Speedway) National Open in Mechanicsburg, Penna., kick off the 2003 Kele World Challenge international qualifiers. All Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders competing in these two historic sprint car races will automatically become eligible for the $10,000-to-win Kele World Challenge, to be run on Friday, August 15, during the 2003 Mopar Parts Knoxville, Iowa, Nationals.
According to Tom Schmeh of Knoxville's National Sprint Car Museum, an official partner of the Kele World Challenge, "We are pleased that the Gold Cup's John and Robbie Padjen, and the National Open's Bob Jones and Alan Kreitzer, have agreed to once again allow Chico and Williams Grove, respectively, to serve as Kele World Challenge qualifying sites. We expect a fair number of Australians and Canadians to compete at both venues, thus qualifying for next year's 21-car, 16-lap international classic at Knoxville."
In addition, Kele World Challenge qualifiers will be held on January 25-26, 2003, at the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at the Premier Speedway in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, and on February 1, 2003, at the Western Springs Speedway in Auckland, New Zealand. Donny Schatz, who won this month's Kele World Challenge by making a last-lap pass of P.J. Chesson, qualified at Warrnambool, while Chesson qualified at Western Springs.
