STAMATIS KATSIMIS TAKES OVER AS FIRST DRIVER OF THE OLYMPIACOS RACING TEAM
In this weekend's fifth round of the Superleague Formula Championship at Vallelunga, Greek driver Stamatis Katsimis will appear behind the wheel of Olympiacos, replacing Danish driver Kasper Andersen.
In the first four rounds of the Championship, Katsimis participated as the rookie driver of Olympiacos. His good performance in the rookies free practice sessions, helped him win the trust of the owner of GU Racing, who then assigned him first driver of the Greek club.
Katsimis past experience in the Italian circuit also played an important part in his selection, as the Greek driver has raced there three times before at Formula Renault, Formula 3 and at a 6 hour endurance race with a Renault Clio.
"My goal is to make a good appearance in the Championship and promote the image of Olympiacos, and of Greece as well. I know the Italian circuit pretty well from previous races and I hope that on Sunday 2nd of November, we will all be happy" Katsimis commented.
How excited are you to represent not only your club, but your country in Superleague Formula?
I'm really excited and proud at the same time. Olympiacos is my favourite team and the most popular club in my country. I think our participation in Supelreague Formula, could really help grow motorsport in Greece.
How much time have you spent in the Olympiacos Superleague Formula car?
Until now, I've been the rookie driver in the first 4 races. Unfortunately, due to certain circumstances, I've completed about 50 laps with the car in total.
What do you think it will mean to the Greek fans to have a local driver aboard their Superleague Formula car?
In the first races Superleague Formula championship is really famous, because the best football team participates in it. From my point of view, I feel that the fans would be more interested watching the races in which a greek driver is participating with Olympiakos car, because they would feel more close to the driver and team character and spirit.
What are your expectations for this weekend at Vallelunga?
In my career, I've been in Vallelunga 3 times in the past. I feel really confident, because I have good knowledge of the circuit, and it is something that can help me have good results. I hope to be as front as possible and give some point to my team.
