Yet again podium for Chris van der Drift in Superleague Formula

NEVERS, 23 May 2010 -- After taking a race win last week at the Dutch TT Circuit of Assen, series rookie Chris van der Drift has once again made the podium, this time in the third round of the Superleague Formula by Sonangol at the French circuit of Magny Cours, the 24 year old New Zealander taking third place in race one. A gearbox problem in race two meant the Olympiacos driver was forced to retire, also precluding the Kiwi from participating in the Super Finale.

Thanks to a great qualifying performance from the Kiwi, the rookie assured himself of a fourth placed start position for the first race of the weekend in the football related race championship. Van der Drift made a good start and despite slight contact held onto fourth position. "I was completely to the left when another car turned in on me. He thought that I was further back, and unfortunately I had nowhere to go", said Van der Drift. Fortunately the Kiwi could continue the race without any sustained damage. With a great pitstop by his team GU Racing, Van der Drift returned to the track gaining a position but amongst some of the slower drivers. "My in and out laps were really quick which resulted in me gaining a place, and with the new tyres I was able to pass the three slower cars relatively easily. I wasn't really held up". The Olympiacos driver held onto third position until the end of the race.

Under the Superleague race format start positions for the second race are determined by the reverse order of the first race results, meaning Van der Drift would start from 15th place. The Kiwi had a fantastic start. "I had certainly passed four cars before I arrived at the hairpin", said Van der Drift, who then had to negoitate a number of crashed cars. Shortly thereafter the unthinkable occurred, as it had done in the fir st race at Assen; the gearbox failed. The Kiwi continued: "After about five minutes it didn't feel so good and a couple of laps later the gearbox failed completely. It was frozen in fourth gear, I had tried to complete the race for the points, but I knew the Super Finale was out of the question though. Unfortunately then we had a safety car period, and I just couldn't drive so slowly in 4th gear and the motor stalled. Just a real shame".

Despite the Kiwi's misfortune, he is looking forward positively to the next championship round to be held at the Spanish circuit of Jarama over the weekend of 18-20 June. "We have very good car speed, so there's no problem there, and I am getting to know the car better every time I go out. Only it's important that the technical problems get solved and we make the finish. I am looking forward to the next race weekend with trust that everything is sorted".

After three of the twelve race weekends complete d, Olympiacos driver Chris van der Drift is fifth in the championship with 151 points.
