Liverpool's city streets alive to the sound of Superleague Formula

Reigning Superleague Formula by Sonangol champions Liverpool returned home to the streets of Merseyside on Tuesday evening where the surrounding buildings and 20,000 spectators shook to the sound of 750bhp.

The Reds' star driver James Walker and his V12-powered single seater were invited to attend the Liverpool Pageant of Power, the precursor to this summer's Cholmondeley Pageant of Power which brings together a host of road, racing, military, flying and floating machinery in the spectacular surroundings of rural Cheshire.

Tuesday's event was designed to bring the stars of the show even closer to the people of Liverpool who turned out in their droves to watch the unique spectacle of racing cars powering along the city's Strand waterfront.

Indeed, Walker and his Liverpool car proved one of the highlights of the evening with the 26-year-old laying down thick black tyre marks along the street course with successive burnouts, before disappearing into a cloud of white smoke thanks to a series of crowd-pleasing pirouettes.

James Walker: "It was a bit of rush to get the car back from Magny-Cours at the weekend but I'm glad we managed to because it was fantastic. We did two runs along the waterside which was similar to the event in Assen town centre a couple of weeks back, so although it was unusual to be driving alongside a river, I had some experience to draw on. I think a lot more people turned up than the organisers were expecting, the place was rammed!"

James also used the opportunity to visit Liverpool FC's training ground and Anfield stadium where he got his hands on the European Cup that the Premier League giants have won no less than five times.

The Cholmondeley Pageant Power runs from 17-18 July.
