Franck Perera Shines on his Return to Racing

After almost a year away from the tracks, Franck Perera made his long awaited return to racing in Superleague Formula by Sonangol at Assen (Netherlands) this weekend.

Competing in the Flamengo car as part of CJ Motorsport's multi-driver "Dream Team" concept, the former Toyota F1 Development Driver made it look like he had never been away as he qualified a remarkable 3rd (missing out on a shot at pole position by the narrowest of margins) and finished race 1 in second place.

Starting on the last row of the grid for race two, as a result of the complete reverse grid format, Perera was making excellent progress and was up to 7th when his exhaust broke, relegating him down to an 11th place finish. Second and eleventh was still enough to earn him third spot for the Super Final although second and seventh would have put him on pole.

With only a 15 minute gap between the end of race 2 and the Super Final, there was no way the necessary repairs could be made on the Flamengo car, and Franck was condemned to a P6 finish in the Final.

"I think that after such a long pause in my career, the performance was not too bad", said Perera. "I have worked very hard in the past few months to be ready for this and I think it has paid off. I took real pleasure in driving this weekend, it was fantastic. This is where I belong! I want to thank Robin Webb at Superleague Formula for welcoming me back, everyone at Team Alpha for their hard work and CJ Motorsport for having enough faith in me to pick me for this round. They have just informed me that my performance here has earned me the place for the next race in Magny Cours, so I am delighted!".

Flamengo now lie 3rd in the 2010 Superleague Formula by Sonangol Championship.
