Team Hummer Goes For Fourth Consecutive Baja 1000 Victory
Reno, NV - November 15, 2004: The 37th annual Tecate SCORE `Baja 1000' kicks off on Wednesday and Team HUMMER is already in Ensenada, Mexico seeing to the last minute details in preparation for the start of the grueling 1016 mile race down the Baja peninsula to La Paz. Scheduled for Nov.16-20 the `Baja 1000' is one of the most widely recognized motorsports events in the world and an international field of over 300 entries will be on hand to take part in this great adventure. Former two-time `Baja 1000' Winner Parnelli Jones will be on hand as Grand Marshall for this year's event. So compelling is this race that each year crossover drivers from a variety of other forms of motorsport take time out of their busy schedules to try their hand in the deserts of Baja. Entered in the event this year are actor and Champ Car team owner, Paul Newman, Nascar driver and former `Baja 1000' winner, Robbie Gordon, Indy 500 Winner, Danny Sullivan, Pike's Peak Champions Rod and Rhys Millen and sports car legend Elliot Forbes-Robinson, to name a few.
Team HUMMER comes to the `Baja 1000' led by owner, Rod Hall, who has won this race a record 17 times. Rod is the only driver in the car & truck division to have competed in all 37 Baja 1000 races and teamed up with Larry Minor in 1969 to become the only drivers ever to have won the race overall in a 4 wheel-drive vehicle. Team HUMMER has dominated this event since 1993, when HUMMER first made the decision to enter off-road racing, by winning 6 of the last 11 `Baja 1000" races in the Stock Full production class. Chad Hall (4-time `Baja 1000' winner) has teamed up with both Josh (2-time `Baja 1000' winner) and Rod to win this event for the past three years and all of the Halls are out to win it again this year. The question is, which HUMMER will cross the finish line first.
Chad Hall/Mike Winkel are teamed up in the #861 Team HUMMER H1 Pickup and will start first in the Stock Full production class while team owner Rod Hall will share driving duties with son, Josh in the #863 Team HUM- MER H2 SUV also competing in Stock Full. Both trucks are coming off big wins at last months Best in the Desert `Las Vegas 200', where they race in different classes, and prior to that finished first (H2) and second (H1) at the BitD `Vegas to Reno' race in June. Rod will start the race in the H2 and Mike Winkel will start in the H1. About 300 miles into the race, at Coco's Corner, both drivers will get out as Josh (#863) and Chad (#861) take over for the race to the finish. These are both evenly matched trucks, based on their times in the last two races, and if neither HUMMER has any serious issues the outcome should prove interesting, to say the least. Of course there are any number of possibili- ties that could take place before anyone gets to La Paz, 1016 mile South of the start in Ensenada. First we have to beat the desert, then we have to beat the competition and finally, we have to avoid beating ourselves in the effort to beat each other!
Television coverage for this year's `Baja 1000' will air on the NBC Television Network in a one hour special to be broadcast on Saturday, December 11 at 2:30 PM (est). Producers of the show will be NBC Sports in association with Aura360 and the Anchor for the show will be emmy award winning sportscaster, Al Trautwig. A special preview segment, which will include NASCAR's Robbie Gordon, will air during the Jeep World of Adventure Series on Saturday, December 4 between 2-3 PM (est) on NBC.
There's no race quite like the `Baja 1000'. When it comes to a test of both man and machine under the most extreme conditions, nothing compares, not Daytona, not the Indy 500...nothing! There's no caution flags here, you just hold on, give it everything you've got and try to be there at the end. There is no team more accomplished at this than Team HUMMER as the record clearly indicates and again this year Team HUMMER intends to be there at the finish!
