SMD Slices Through the Field at Baja 500
Heber, California (June 6, 2007) -- As the 39th annual SCORE Tecate Baja 500 began to get underway, SMD Motorsports was ready to display a strong showing in their second race since the arrival of the Geiser Bros. designed Trophy-Truck. Months of preparation that included drivers Matt and David Scaroni spending the entire week in Mexico before the race prerunning the course promised to pay off. The entire SMD Motorsports crew was briefed on their assignments and stood ready to assist the truck along the course. The #27 SMD Trophy-Truck stood ready to start in the 18th position.
After the #27 SMD Motorsports Trophy-Truck fired off the start line, time splits indicated that they were racing with the front of the pack, running as high as second place by the half way point despite already suffering a rear flat due to a boulder placed in the middle course by spectators, and a stop to examine a leaking rear end seal. As the race wore on, the leaking rear end seal as well as a broken rear brake rotor caused the SMD Trophy-Truck enough downtime to be taken out of contention for a win, but still the chance for a strong run. After the driver change in which Matt relinquished the truck to David, time was frantically made up as the #27 Trophy Truck performed flawlessly even without the use of the right rear brakes. The final result was a sixth place finish in the large Trophy-Truck field.
Matt Scaroni commented "After a tough day of racing we are pleased to be able to finish as high as we did. The SMD crew executed repairs on the minor issues that we had flawlessly. After placing third at the Terrible's Town 250 and a sixth place here at the Baja 500, it is clear that we are running consistently at the top of the order, which is what it takes to win in this class."
After completing the second half of the race, David Scaroni remarked "I'm really impressed with how the truck worked. The FOX Shox absorbed all of the bumps, the BFGoodrich tires stood strong against the merciless terrain, and the KC Highlights lit the way for the last part of the course. You can't ask for anymore than that!"
Team owner Steve Scaroni added "We're really pleased with how everything is coming together; we have some great supporters and a great team. It's only a matter of time before you will find SMD in the winner's circle."
SMD Motorsport's next race will be the Best in the Desert TSCO Vegas to Reno, August 23-25.
