CHRIS WEHRHEIM VW JETTA TDI CUP ROAD AMERICA REPORT
"Wehrheim scores two podium finishes"
Norcross, GA (August 25, 2010) - Heading into the penultimate event of the VW Jetta TDI Cup, Chris Wehrheim has had a string of bad luck with two DNF's in a row. Chris was hoping at Road America he would get things back on track and finish the season on a high note.
Events started bright and early Friday morning with practice. The track was damp from rain the previous evening and the morning fog had yet to burn away. The session was abruptly stopped with one red flag and a full course caution due to visibility issues. The drivers only got two green flag laps and Chris ended the session in 6th position. The first 30 minute qualifying session was held on a dry track and Chris threw down a blistering lap to give him pole position in race one. His three fastest laps were all good enough to give him pole. The weather began getting worse for qualifying two and rain appeared to be on the horizon as the cars left the grid. After one timed lap the skies opened and the session was red flagged with Chris winding up 5th.
Starting from pole in race one, Chris held the lead through turn four, but was passed under braking into turn five. Falling back to fourth, Chris quickly moved back to the lead where he stayed for the majority of the race. Coming up to the white flag he was passed on the front stretch, but he knew he could get the lead back heading into Canada corner on the back straight away. After getting a great run out of the carousel and the kink, Chris had the pass keyed up for the lead but was blocked in the brake zone and chose not to push the issue crossing the line in second position.
Chris did not get off to a great start for race two on Sunday falling back a few positions. After battling back up to 6th, Chris made a small mistake coming onto the front stretch and fell back to 9th position. With one lap to go Chris found himself back in 5th position gaining ground on the lead pack. Head into turn 5 Chris went as late as possible on the brake passing one car and followed that up with another pass heading up the hill into turn 6. This put Chris into 3rd position, but he was not satisfied with that and made the pass for 2nd position heading into Canada corner giving Chris a pair of 2nd place finishes for the weekend.
"This was a great weekend for me coming back from a tough weekend at Autobahn where I got a flat tire running in second," stated Wehrheim. "The racing was tough all weekend with the draft playing a big factor, my racing experience was a big help in getting these two podium finishes. I am looking forward to heading down to Mexico and ending the season with at least one win."
