AJNR/Brimtek - Disappointing Result for Round 4 of the VW Jetta TDI Cup at MMP

Hello Again,

The day is done for me at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT for Round 4 of the VW Jetta TDI Cup. What would have been a potential strong top 10 finish ended in disaster before I could even complete one lap on the East Course configuration on this beautiful day.

The day started off at 8 AM with a quick debrief with our technicians and with our driving instructors to get us prepared for the race. Then it was time to fuel up. Scrambled eggs, potatoes, and french toast were on the menu this morning. Good eats!

Roger Lee Hayden was nice enough to become our guest speaker for the weekend and gave us a little bit of insight into all of the obstacles he has had to overcome to get him where he is at today. Very motivational and was a great story to hear coming from the World Super Bike competitor.

I would be starting in the 11th spot for our race today. At 11 AM we gridded on the front straight for our usual standing start, the lights illuminated, we revved our engines, lights go out, and then we were off to start Round 4!

Everyone had a very clean start for the most part going into T1. There was some serious side by side action and was able to gain a couple spots in the standings. The field then got into single file as we were close to completing our first lap. Then, heading into T13, which is the second to last corner on the track, the car started to hop a bit and became a bit more violent through the turn. I was just going to ride it out until it would straighten up as we headed towards T14. Then, I heard the tire de-bead from the rim and the wheel was scraping on the ground and resulted in a spin. As the back end of the car came around, Chris Wheirhiem did everything he could to avoid me but the front end of my car t-boned the driver's side of his. The airbag in my car deployed and then ended up in the guardrail.

To not even complete a lap and gain any valuable points is a huge disappointment for me. I was really looking forward to another top 10 finish today to keep me in the hunt, but it was not to be. All I can do now is keep my head up and prepare for Round 5 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in two weeks. This is a track that I know quite well and am really looking forward to a strong finish at this event.

Again, thank you to everyone for your continued patronage this season and am looking forward to great things in the future!

All the best,
    AJ Nealey
