Eleven competitors Nab Back-to-Back wins at Farmington ProSolo
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 9, 2004) -- Just as the sense of urgency that comes with a dwindling season schedule began to waft through the ProSolo ranks at McGee Park in Farmington, N.M., many top soloists appeared to take notice as they dominated their respective weekends during the fifth round of The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries.
Josh Sortor, of Glendale, Ariz., put together his best ProSolo event of the year, winning the Hawk Performance Super Challenge for the first time in 2004, the Honda Street Challenge for a second time and the Street Touring Xtreme class for the third time in five events.
Driving his 5zigen-progress-bfgoodrich 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX, Sortor beat out Modified Index competitor Paul Russell, of San Diego, Calif., who finished second in his class in his www.f125.com 2002 Honda/C.R.G. Hero as well. Bob Tunnell, of Superior, Colo., back after sitting out round four of the NationalSeries, had his best showing of the year with a third-place finish in the Super Challenge to go along with his third class win this season in his Street Modified Bimmerhaus/Hoosier/H&RSprings 1995 BMW M3.
In all, eleven competitors claimed their second class win in a row over the weekend.
Among those was Mark Chiles, of Rocky Mount, N.C., who has won back-to-back twice in 2004, nabbing two wins in both H Stock and G Stock. This past weekend, Chiles' Mini of Charleston/MiniUSA.com 2003 Mini Cooper S roasted GS with a victory margin of 1.456 seconds over Keith Brown, of Des Moines, Wash., who was in his Team RH/MiniUSA.com 2002 Mini Cooper BR. Chiles' victory margin earned him the top-qualifier spot in the Super Challenge.
John Ames, of Colorado Springs, Colo., notched his second straight victory in Super Stock, driving his Ames Tech Consulting 2004 Chevrolet Corvette to the win by 0.246-sec. over Kevin Dietz, of Seattle, Wash. Dietz held the lead going into Sunday, but pylons plagued Dietz all weekend while Ames put together several clean runs that enabled him to grab the win. Dietz wasn't the only SS driver to have problems, though, as an incredible 71 cones were hit by the field's 10 drivers.
James Yom, of Palatine, Ill., saved his best for last in B Stock as he ripped off his fastest times of the event on Sunday in his Sneaky Bastid Racing 2000 Honda S2000. His efforts catapulted him into the top spot by 0.098-sec. where he would stay. Mitch Fagundes, of Fresno, Calif., was the hard-luck, second-place finisher in his 2000 Honda S2000. David Schotz, of Granada Hills, Calif., began Sunday's runs in first place but wound up third in his sccaforums.com/Kumho Tires 2004 Ford Mustang.
Katie Elder, of Folsom, Calif., might have scored the biggest double of the event as she seized her second straight Ladies Challenge victory. Coming in second to Elder's Kumho/HAP/Bilstein/Am's Tire 1989 Honda Civic this time around was Meredith Brown, of Los Alamos, N.M., who was in her Isotope Wheels/Automotive Pros 1993 Toyota MR2. Brown finished third in Ladies 1 action behind Dawn Maxwell, of Phoenix, Ariz., who then flip-flopped finish spots with Brown in the Ladies Challenge.
Competitors and enthusiasts now have almost a full month to reload and prepare for Round Six of The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries, taking place at FedEx Stadium in Washington, D.C., June 5-6.
The next stop on The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Tour is also at Fed Ex Stadium, and is set for May 29-30.
