Californians Dominate Round Four of The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries in Atwater

ATWATER, Calif. (April 28, 2004) - Tom Berry, of Alta Loma, Calif., became the fourth different Hawk Performance Super Challenge winner in four rounds of the 2004 The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries last weekend, beating out Gary Thomason, of Oceanside, Calif., in the final round of the 32-person square-off. Scott McHugh, of Santa Clarita, Calif., finished third.

Berry's win, in his Kumho/Ankeny Racing Enterprise 1996 Chevrolet Corvette, made it a double for him as he also narrowly escaped a late hard-charging effort by Bill Buetow, of Puyallup, Wash., in his Kumho/NayKid Racing 1989 Corvette, and barely emerged victorious in B Street Prepared by 0.058-sec. The BSP win was the second of the season for Berry, his first coming in Round Two of the NationalSeries in San Bernardino, Calif.

While he came up just a bit short in the Super Challenge, the weekend wasn't a total wash for Thomason. His Street Modified 2 Kumho Tires/Pro Parts 1999 Corvette was the top Street class performer of the Super Challenge, which meant Thomason walked away with the Honda Street Challenge award and contingency money.

McHugh finished second in a tightly contested A Stock class that sent its top five drivers, all from California, to the Super Challenge, all of whom were separated by just 0.365-sec. Finishing ahead of McHugh on his final left-course run was Jason Uyeda, of Simi Valley, Calif., in his Neversoft Entertainment 2003 Porsche Boxter S. Uyeda pulled out the win despite hitting cones on six different runs throughout the weekend.

Mitch Fagundes, of Fresno, Calif., in his Dad Racing 2000 Honda S2000, held off Joe Goeke, of Kirkland, Wash., in his Team Butt Heat!/Tires Plus 2000 Honda S2000, coming out on top by a mere 0.081-sec. in B Stock action. David Schotz, of Granada Hills, Calif., completed the Golden State BS podium sweep, finishing third in his SCCAForums.com/Kumho Tires 2004 Ford Mustang after being bumped into the class from F Stock.

The event's closest outcome of the weekend was in C Stock where Michael Wootton, of Austin, Texas, pulled off the win in come-from-behind fashion with a fantastic effort on his last right-side run. Wootton was trailing Paul Brown, of Los Alamos, N.M., when he ran his fastest right-side time of the day (29.401) in his autostradausa.com 1999 Mazda Miata, and nudged ahead of Brown's E Stock Isotope Wheels/Automotive Pros 1993 Toyota MR2 by the final victory margin of 0.016-sec.

In another hotly-contested battle, Conor Botkin, of Jamul, Calif., waited until his very last run of the weekend to claim the E Street Prepared title. In his CCC Racing 2002 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, Botkin leaped from third to first with his finish, edging out Steve Eguina, of Laguna Hills, Calif., and his USA Mortgage/Ankeny Racing Enterprises 1996 Camaro S, by 0.019-sec.

Mark Chiles, of Rocky Mount, N.C., continued his winning ways of 2004 with another H Stock crown. Chiles led all weekend in his Mini of Charleston/ MiniUSA.com 2003 Mini Cooper, but had to sweat out a last ditch effort from Alan Dahl, of Federal Way, Wash. Dahl stormed all the way up to within 0.048-sec. of Chiles' time in his 1995 Audi 90 Quattro, but couldn't close the gap any further.

The win was Chiles' second HS win and third overall this season.

On the ladies' side, Katie Elder, of Folsom, Calif., grabbed her first Ladies' Challenge win of the season, beating out runner-up LiNay White, of Puyallup, Wash. Leslie Cohen, of Encinitas, Calif., finished third.

Elder, in her Kumho/HAP/Bilstein/Am's Tire 1988 Honda Civic, coupled the Challenge win with a victory in Ladies 1 action, where she beat out Dawn Maxwell, of Phoenix, Ariz.., who was driving her MiniUSA.com/Jim's Detail Shop 2002 Mini Cooper. The L1 win was the second in the last three events for Elder, and the second time she finished on the podium in the Ladies' Challenge as she finished third overall at San Bernardino.

Round Five of The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries moves to the Desert Southwest and Farmington, N.M., May 7-8. For more information about The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries, visit the newly-remodeled www.scca.com website.
