Road to Topeka begins this weekend as the Tire Rack SCCA National Solo Season starts this weekend in Ft. Myers.
TOPEKA, Kan. (February 20, 2003)--The beginning of the year-long journey of competition culminating with The Tire Rack Solo II Nationals and ProSolo Championships begins this weekend in Ft. Myers, Fla. as The Tire Rack SCCA National Tour kicks off its 2003 season.
For the second-straight season, Buckingham Field will be the host site for the season-opening round for The Tire Rack SCCA National Tour; the opening event of the nine-round schedule making up "The Road To Topeka." Nearly 200 competitors will be on hand for the season-opening round for both the National Tour (February 22-23) and the ProSolo NationalSeries (March 1-2).
The Tire Rack SCCA National Tour utilizes the Solo II format invented by the SCCA, which pits drivers against the clock on a course defined by pylons. Each competitor takes three runs on each of two courses, with the fastest times from both courses added together to calculate a driver's cumulative time. The Solo II format is what makes up the main part of the enormous Tire Rack Solo II Nationals each year at Forbes Field, Topeka, Kan., which hosts 1200 competitor/teams, making it the largest motorsports competition in North America, and possibly the world.
"The SCCA Solo program is the perfect vehicle for a motorsports or automotive enthusiast to become involved in competition," said Steve Johnson, SCCA President and CEO. "There are classes within the program that allow individuals to compete in, essentially, whatever they drive on the street with little or no modification."
In 2002, more than 72,000 entries for Solo II events nationwide were processed, including regional events as well as The Tire Rack SCCA National Tour and Solo II Nationals.
"The regional Solo II programs are true grassroots motorsports events," said Johnson. "The best drivers from these events step up to the National events, which lead to The Tire Rack SCCA Solo II Nationals."
The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries combines the excitement of drag racing with the precision of Solo II in a format that pits drivers head-to-head on mirror image courses, a format also invented and perfected by the SCCA. Each event culminates with the Open Challenge, which crowns the top eliminator for each event, and the Honda Ladies Challenge, which crowns the top competitor from the classes open only to women.
The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries 2003 schedule features 11 events, culminating in Topeka September 6-7, the weekend preceding The Tire Rack SCCA Solo II Nationals.
