SCCA Convention, MSX Expo Wrap Sunday In The Charlotte Convention Center

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Sports Car Club of America’s National Convention celebrating SCCA’s 70th anniversary and the first North American Motorsports Expo (MSX) wrapped concurrently on Sunday from the Charlotte Convention Center after three days of information, celebration, scholarship, reflection and projection on the Club and the sport.

Saturday evening’s SCCA Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet presented by Mazda and the daylight savings time jump didn’t damper Sunday’s activities.

Sunday morning’s highlights included the Tall Tales With SCCA Legends in the MSX Exhibit Hall, with a collection of SCCA Hall of Famers and long-time members trading bench racing stories. Toly Arutunoff led the discussion, which included R. David Jones, Kathy Barnes, Bob and Pat Bondurant and more throughout the audience contributing to the conversation.

That session ended with a 70 year retrospective and slide show from the now-Hall of Famer Pete Hylton, who served for many years as the Club’s official archivist.

At noon, SCCA Pro Racing Champion and current Pirelli World Challenge driver Andy Pilgrim hosted a seminar concerning on-track preparation and continued into his passion, safety among teen drivers.

The Convention and the MSX Expo closed at 3 p.m.

Before Saturday night’s SCCA Hall of Fame festivities, and handful of Solo and Club Racing awards were handed out in each group’s respective town halls.

Solo Region Cups, given to the individual SCCA Regions whose participants fared the best at the 2013 Tire Rack Solo National Championship, went to the Lone Star Region (Small Region category), Northeastern Ohio Region (Medium), Texas Region (Large), and Milwaukee Region (Jumbo).

Club Racing gave 18-year-old Trent Hindman the Jim Fitzgerald Rookie of the Year, Jeff Bartz the Kimberly Cup for most improved driver, and Charlie Clark the John McGill Award for outstanding contribution to the Club Racing program.

The SCCA National Convention and the North American Motorsports Expo ran Friday through Sunday at the Charlotte Westin and the Charlotte Convention Center.
