Franklin Futrelle enters seventh event as championship leader and five-time race winner
ELKHART LAKE, WIS. (June 18, 2008) -- As part of the renowned SCCA Chicago Region June Sprints, the 2008 edition of the Speed Connection Formula Mazda Challenge will contest its seventh round of action on June 20-21 at Road America in Wisconsin. Franklin Futrelle, of Augusta, Ga., enters the single-race event as the driver to beat in the eight-race championship. Currently leading the championship fight by a significant margin, Futrelle has won four consecutive races and five of the six races thus far.
Utilizing the famed 4.0-mile road course north of Milwaukee, Round Seven will mark the penultimate event of the inaugural Speed Connection Formula Mazda Challenge season. In addition to the championship contenders going head-to-head for top honors, many of the best Formula Mazda drivers in the country will be in attendance.
As the lone driver other than Futrelle to visit victory lane in '08, series organizer Bruce Lawrence enters the race in Wisconsin sitting second in the battle for the inaugural Speed Connection Formula Mazda Challenge title. The Alaska-born driver now resides in Georgia and has been a constant threat to win races, having previously scored the victory in Round Two at Roebling Road Raceway.
In addition to the two championship leaders, Sam Lockwood and Dale Swope enter the weekend as contenders for top honors. Lockwood currently lies third in the championship fight and has been among the leaders at every round he has contested, while is Swope is just one position further adrift in the standings and a proven front-runner in the FM class. Overall, nine drivers are scheduled to take the green flag for Round Seven of the Speed Connection Formula Mazda Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
The action at Road America gets underway on Friday (June 20) with a 25-minute practice session for the Speed Connection Formula Mazda Challenge competitors. This will be followed by the first of two 25-minute qualifying sessions late in the day. Returning to the fast Elkhart Lake, Wis., road course on Saturday (June 21), the morning qualifying session will set the grid for Round Seven, with the 13-lap affair scheduled to run at the end of the day.
The inaugural Speed Connection Formula Mazda Challenge concludes July 12-13, at Watkins Glen International.
