Road America To Host Prestigious Racing Championship
ELKHART LAKE, WI. (September 16, 2009) - Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) drivers from around the country will soon participate in what is known as the pinnacle of motorsports, the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.® The event will be held at Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI, September 24-27, 2009. The Runoffs annually crown the national champions of SCCA Club Racing. The list of past Runoffs Champions is a who's who in road-racing history that includes Skip Barber, Michael Galati, Paul Newman, Bobby Rahal, Graham Rahal, Greg Ray, Boris Said and Scott Sharp.
The sheer number of competitors makes the Runoffs the largest annual amateur road-racing event in the world. Over 600 of the nation's best amateur racers make the annual trek for the event. With 24 races each featuring a different class of car, the paddock is loaded with a huge variety of makes and models including American muscle Corvettes and Mustangs; Indy-style, open-wheel formula cars; historic Triumphs and Austin Healeys; and Toyotas, Mazdas and BMWs straight off the showroom floor.
Road America's history dates back to the early 1950s when public street races in the Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin area were a part of the SCCA National Championship Series. When street racing became illegal in 1952, participants and supporters, may from the Chicago area, joined efforts and raised funds to develop Road America. The track held its first event, the SCCA National, on September 10-11, 1955. Today, the 14-turn, 4.048-mile track holds its original configuration and continues to challenge the world's best two- and four-wheel racers.
Spectator gates open at 7:00 a.m. daily and races run rain or shine. Tickets to the National Championship Runoffs® are $20 Thursday, $20 Friday, $30 Saturday and $30 Sunday. Kids 12 and under are free with a paying adult. Parking, paddock access and grandstand seating are also free with ticket purchase. Special ticket promotions are detailed on-line.
