Evans Victorious at the Final Race of Champions
Nick Evans, 17, out paced the field on Sunday at the Central Division Race of Champions to earn his second national win in a row. Saturday morning started with Evans attending Mansfield Senior High School to take the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), forcing Evans to miss his first qualifying round. Luckily the rain held off and he was able grab a dry qualifying run late in the afternoon. Evans managed only to qualify on the outside of the third row for position six.
When the green was dropped the field fanned as the second row struggled to get a jump. The race was quite eventful with numerous incidents on the newly repaved Mid-Ohio course. Evans and Jeff Beck eventually pulled out a slight lead over Scott Rettich during the closing laps of the race. On the final corner of the final lap Evans slid slightly wide to avoid a lap car which allowed Beck to challenge. Evans crossed the finish line first only a few feet in front of Beck. The margin of victory was only .098 seconds.
"It was quite an eventful race and also very close, much closer than I prefer!" said the Central Division point leader. "This is a great way to lead up to the June Sprints, one of the largest amateur road races in the world, so I am quite anxious to get to Elkhart Lake."
"To win back to back races is fantastic, now I have increased my lead in the Central Division and I hope to continue the trend." commented Evans.
