GOODYEAR TRIUMPHS AGAIN AT SCCA RUNOFFS
TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 13, 2008) -- The Goodyear family of brands won a national championship when it collected the most victories among tiremakers at the 45th SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Heartland Park Topeka. Goodyear has been the winningest tiremaker in Runoffs history.
Drivers racing on Goodyear tires won 11 championships and a Dunlop-clad racer won another in this nation's national championship event for amateur sports car racers. The event attracted 503 entrants and nine tiremakers.
"This was the culmination of a year-long effort for a total of 12 victories at the Runoffs," said Justin Fantozzi, Goodyear's marketing manager for global race tires. "Our engineers did a great job all week with a dedicated effort to help our customers win races."
Goodyear-shod cars filled 30 podium spots and swept the podium positions in seven races.
Peter Shadowen finished second in Grand Touring Lite (GT Lite), part of a sweep of the podium by Goodyear-equipped cars. He said, "I had as good grip at the end of the race as I did the first lap of the race."
Goodyear's wins came in every application of racing, from open wheel formula cars to the production-based cars and the SCCA's specially designed, open cockpit cars.
The Goodyear winners included Franklin Futrelle (Formula Mazda), Jesse Prather (E Production), Mike Miserendino (Spec Racer Ford), Pete Peterson (GT3), J.R. Osborne (D Sport Racing and C Sport Racing), Dan Collishaw (H Production), Chris Keller (Formula Ford), Peter Zekert (GT Lite), Rick Harris (F Production) and Bill Gray (GT1).
Dunlop's winner was James Goughary in GT2.
Goodyear-clad cars and drivers collected 11 pole positions. No tiremaker won more.
"We'll continue Goodyear's tradition of looking ahead," Fantozzi said. "We'll be working on new designs Monday for the 2009 Runoffs."
Keller said he appreciated Goodyear's variety of tread compounds. He said, "We set more records this year on the 430, I really like that compound. But the 160 is what we ran here a month ago. It held up in that heat and this weekend is quite a bit cooler and so we were able to gamble a little bit on the soft compound."
