Mueller Motorsports wins first SCCA National event at Blackhawk Farms
SOUTH BELOIT, IL (May 3, 2009) - Mueller Motorsports and driver Michael Mueller won their first SCCA National event at Blackhawk Farms Raceway over the weekend, taking victory in the Formula 500 class.
After six long months of Wisconsin winter it was finally time to get back on the racetrack for the Central Division season opener. Qualifying on Sunday morning saw Michael take second position on the grid next to polesitter Steve Jondal. The start of the race resulted in a close fight for turn one with Jondal coming out in the lead, Bob Giesen sneaking into second with Mueller behind in third.
Lap two saw Giesen move past Jondal for the lead, however it was short lived as Jondal took the position right back the following lap with Mueller drafting close behind to move into second. From there the battle for the lead would be between Mueller and Jondal as the two Red Devil chassis built a slight gap to the rest of the field. Jondal held his lead as slower Formula Vee traffic started to become a factor around lap six. Then on lap nine, Mueller was able to get a run out of the final corner, move alongside down the front straight and complete the pass for the lead into turn one.
For the next ten laps Jondal hounded Mueller for the top spot as the drivers continued to work through traffic. On lap nineteen Mueller put in the fastest lap of the race at a 1:13.664 and began to open up a gap to second place. As Jondal dropped back William Cobb was charging towards the front, taking over second as the race wound down. It wasn't quite enough however, as the lead was too much for Cobb to pull back.
Mueller went on to win his first SCCA National event in only his second national start. William Cobb was runner-up, 2.878 seconds behind the lead with Steve Jondal rounding out the top three.
The next event for Mueller Motorsports will once again be at Blackhawk Farms Raceway for the Milwaukee Region Carl Mueller Memorial National event on May 15-16.
