Notes from DSR press room meeting.
Winner: Dave Kaiser Second: Glen Wild Third: Nancy James
Winner Dave Kaiser, 3rd win in a row, "4 out of 5 for Mid-Ohio. The one I lost I forgot to put gas in the car." Kind of hard to go to the banquet when you can only take one person. I can't afford to pay for 12 tickets ($120) for the crew and family. Something broke at the end, valve spring, or valve, or maybe just an exhaust header. It happened about a lap and a half from the end. It was an expensive lap.
Dominated the event since he's been here. Did a lot more planning this year. Consistent times, got the pole, drove away. Plan was to get a big lead just in case something happened.
Any problems with the car at mid-point? Hit some traffic so I slowed down to play it safe. Then I cleared traffic I picked up the pace. The car could have run low 29s the whole race if we wanted to push it.
At the end, how close did Glen get? I have no idea. It was running okay, but it was probably in the 1:40s. We're revving these things to over 12000 RPM.
Had no one to race with. Did that make it harder? No, we had everything sorted out, knew what we could do. Knew if nothing got in the way we could run away.
Are you gonna try to go for four in a row? I'll go for the fourth win, next year or the year after. It's not good to stay in one class too long and dominate. The only thing faster is Atlantics. It's not that much faster, but it's different. It's probably the only other car I'm interested in. I'm a club racer, I'm not interested in going pro. I like having a savings account!
I live in northern California, but I run out of SoPac because the Nationals are spaced out better. They start in January and end on Labor Day instead of NorPac's May to August schedule. Picked Arizona cause people are friendly there; we're always treated great.
On class consolidation. I'd like to see fewer classes with better racing. If everyone continued to race, it would get the field counts up. Like to increase tow funds, but also make it more exclusive event. Like to make it easier for west coast people to come out; there are 5 or 10 guys out there that can't afford time or money to make the trip that could've been in top 10. It's always a very personal thing, everyone favors their own class, but I can see an argument for consolidating CSR and DSR.
Used to drive F440s and FVs but I like to tinker.
Nancy James and Glen Wild haven't found their way to the press room yet!
F440 race had melee at start at Turn 7.
