Runoffs Notes - 18 - Friday copyright 1996 John P. M. Dillon
T1 preliminary results: First: David Schardt Second: Grant Carter Third: Don Mills
Mills got by Gary in T.11 who was backing because of Oil.
To Mills: You were closing quickly at the end. Could you have picked up another spot or were you content to stay in third? I wasn't content at all. I wasn't closing quickly, but slowly, but I was hoping I could catch Grant.
To Grant: Did tires go away mid race? No, but it got real slippery. This car is new to me, I sold my tow vehicle to buy this car two weeks ago. Couldn't get tire pressure right, especially as the fuel load lightened.
To David: On lap 4, how did you get lead? I'd gained on Grant a couple of corners before. I saw the slippery flag, he hit the brakes a little early, so I decided that was my only shot to get the lead and I went for it. Didn't slip much, corner workers were pointing the way by. The oil actually started in Turn 7. It feels unbelievable to win in my rookie National year. My goal was to win a national championship, never expected it in first year. My dad placed 3rd at Atlanta in a Yenko Stinger in '74. We've been coming to Runoffs for every year since then.
Don gets to play doctor for the next couple of days, volunteering in the med shed.
To all: Were weather conditions a factor? Grant: we would have been faster in the rain! David: Preludes have an advantage in the rain. Cold weather helps our cars, helps the driver too. First lap was slippery on cold tires. Lot of bumping first lap. I wasn't in danger of losing position, but it's kind of unnerving. None of it was intentional, generally a good clean race.
Grant: Kind of hoped that Dave would slide off! It taught me to be cautious from then on out. It's hard to beat people at their home track, they definitely know this track better than I do. Don: He won here last year too!
Grant: Kumhos have been coming up to speed last couple of years. They're pretty much right there. I'd say all three manufacturers are pretty competitive this week.
To David: You once said you could run this track in your sleep. The home track advantage helped me calm down, get into a rhythm faster.
