Rahal Rules SCCA National Formula Atlantic Event at BeaveRun
WAMPUM, Pa., June 21 - Sixteen-year-old Graham Rahal gave his father, racing legend Bobby Rahal, a perfect racing weekend as a Father's Day present.
The teen from New Albany, Ohio dominated a SCCA national Formula Atlantic event at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex here over the weekend by winning the pole and then leading every lap of the 30-lap race on Sunday, lapping the entire field and demolishing the previous track record in the process.
He was behind the wheel of a black, yellow and white Team Rahal Swift serviced by Andersen Walko Racing. It is sponsored by The Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, Bosch, Renier Construction and Norwalk Furniture.
There were 28 cars in the race and eight in Rahal's class.
"We didn't have any problems at all," the winner said modestly. "The car was good."
Rahal also dominated a similar event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on June 9.
He'll compete in his Andersen Walko Racing Star Mazda car at the SCCA June Sprints at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. this coming weekend, a track he has driven at many times in the past.
Then it's on to Colorado Springs, Colo., where he'll compete in a Star Mazda race presented by Goodyear on July 3. He is currently second in that series' point standings. The race at Pikes Peak International Raceway is the first of four races on that circuit in July, as there is a doubleheader at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. July 16-17 and an event at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway on July 30.
