DiCarlo finishes second at Portland International
Phoenix, Ariz. -- May 20, 2004 -- Star Mazda racer Gabi DiCarlo of Phoenix, Ariz., finished second at the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Regional Event at the Portland International Raceway on Sunday. This victory marks DiCarlo's second podium finish in a row.
"It's always exciting to drive on a new track and do so well," said Gabi DiCarlo, an 18-year-old driver in the Star Mazda West Coast Championship Series. "I learned a lot during the race that I will be able to apply to my next race at Pacific Raceway in Seattle."
Thursday's practice session was proof of DiCarlo's ability to adapt to new tracks. Her lap times improved with every session. DiCarlo's solid run during Friday's qualifying session resulted in a fifth place starting position for Saturday's race.
On race day, with a damp track and cold temperatures, DiCarlo managed a clean start. She moved up from fifth place to first on the start, but spun in the second turn due to the wet track and dropped back to fifth place. DiCarlo was running fifth when contact on the second lap put her out of the race for the day. After repairs to her #81 Star Mazda she made it out in time for regional practices that afternoon to prepare for Sunday's SCCA regional race for more seat time at Portland International Raceway.
Sunday morning's qualifying session resulted in a second place starting position. During the race DiCarlo slipped to third, but on the last lap she made a pass for a second place finish.
"I can't thank my teammates and pit crew enough for their help and support. Without their hard work I wouldn't be able to have the success that we are experiencing," added DiCarlo. "I'm looking forward to our next race and I'm looking for another great finish!"
Next on DiCarlo's racing schedule is the Star Mazda Western Championship Series race at the Pacific Raceway in Seattle, Wash., on May 29-31, 2004.
