17 year-old Hinsdale, Illinois, high school Junior, Cooper MacNeil has quickly gone from a contender for this year's SCCA SafeRacer National Touring 2 championship to the favorite. MacNeil solidified this role May 21st-23, 2010 in his first Touring 2 races at the 4.0 mile Road America circuit. The WeatherTech racer swept the action at The Cat Double National. MacNeil piloted his Fall-Line Motorsports prepared BMW E46 to his fifth National win in seven races and blistered the existing track record at the circuit which will hold the National Championship race later this year.
Race one, May 22nd had Cooper take pole for both races due to a qualifying cancellation from fog. MacNeil cleared fellow T2 competitor Andy Woverton's Pontiac Solstice by six tenths. MacNeil would cruise to victory besting the track record at a 2:31:3. Race two, May 23rd saw much warmer conditions, creating a hot and greasy racetrack. MacNeil's race pace was about one second slower then the prior day, however, he eclisped fellow Fall-Line team-mate Alan Kossof by nearly 22 seconds. What makes Cooper's weekend even more impressive is the fact he was competing against 12 other cars in the T2 class.
"I had a feeling the WeatherTech BMW would be the car to beat here this weekend, I was a little nervous prior to the weekend as I had never raced here in T2. Road America is THE place we have to have success this year, so breaking the track record feels really great. I have to thank the whole Fall-Line Motorsports crew for giving me a car that is suited to my liking. I can't wait for the June Sprints," stated an optimistic Cooper after the weekend.
MacNeil will make his first Continental Tire Sports Car race next weekend at Lime Rock where he will partner Gunther Schaldach driving a GS BMW E46 for WeatherTech and Fall-Line Motorsports.
