Honda tales ITA victory in Khumo 12 Hours at the Point
Washington, DC 7 June, 2002: For the second consecutive year, the LaCrosse Wisconsin based Arrested Adolescents Racing Team of Bob Roth, Chuck Peterson and Brandon Peterson took the Improved Touring A victory at the Khumo Tires 12 Hours at the Point. The race, sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America, was held June 1 on the challenging Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, WV. Arrested Adolescents Racing bested mechanical gremlins, the heat and the competition on their way to victory.
Brandon Peterson placed the team's 1988 Honda CRX Si in the 5th overall qualifying position and the team had worked its way to 4th overall in the 50 car field before suffering a front hub failure at the 2 1/2 hour mark of the race. According to Roth, "When the hub broke, we knew we were facing an uphill chase." The team remained in the pits for 26 minutes while the front upright and axle were replaced. "We really owe our entire crew and especially the Chief Janet Roth a big thanks for, not only getting the work done so quickly, but also for the excellent pit work during the rest of the race," added Roth.
Arrested Adolescents Racing returned to the track in fifth place in ITA and more than 13 laps behind the leading ITA team. The team spent the next seven and one-half hours erasing the deficit caused by the pit stop, but the consistent driving of Roth, Brandon Peterson and Chuck Peterson slowly erased the gap. With slightly less than 90 minutes remaining, the team took the Improved Touring A lead. After that point, the team built up a 5-lap lead with Chuck Peterson taking the team to the checker.
This year's victory was especially significant in that the team, even with its long repair, completed 6 more laps than their nearly flawless ITA team win at Summit Point in 2001. For its next endurance event, the Arrested Adolescents Racing team plans to defend its 2001 overall victory of the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs Sanctioned "10 Hours at the Man" on September 1, 2002 at Gingerman Racetrack in Michigan.
