The Pikes Peak International HillClimb, June 24-26, is famous for featuring a mix of competitive classes, including motorcycles, quads, big rigs, open wheel racers, and rally cars. But 20-year-old motorcycle legend Travis Pastrana will make his debut at the famed "Race to the Clouds" not on a bike but rather behind the wheel of a Vermont SportsCar prepared Subaru WRX STi rally car in the SCCA ProRally class.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, one of America's most famous and longest running motorsports events, takes place on a 12.5 mile ribbon of mountain road that snakes its way up to the 14,100 foot summit of Pikes Peak, located in central Colorado. First started in 1916, Pikes Peak is America's second oldest auto race, only the Indy 500 is older. A unique challenge for competing teams is dealing with the varying surfaces of the mountain course because the road's lower half is fully paved while the upper half is gravel. The historic and spectacular nature of the event attracts media from across the World along with over 20,000 fans. The event will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Vermont SportsCar, one of North America's leading rally car builders, will run X-Games and Supercross star Travis Pastrana in an Open Class Subaru WRX STi that will have much more horsepower than the Group N trim Subaru he recently drove to a 3rd in Class, 4th Overall, finish at the Subaru Rim of the World Rally last month. "After seeing Travis do so well at Rim, on only his first gravel rally, we know that if he gets a clean run he could very well make it to the podium," said Lance Smith, Team Director and owner of Vermont SportsCar.

In an attempt to make the Pikes Peak event more closely resemble a traditional, multi-stage rally, the teams entered in the SCCA ProRally class will run more than just once up the mountain. Instead, they will run several shorter sections of the course on the days leading up to race-day (June 26th) and then run the entire course twice on race-day. One of the shorter sections will be run at night, under total darkness, a challenge never before attempted at Pikes Peak.

"The Pike's Peak Hillclimb has always been something I was excited about doing," explains Pastrana. "I am looking forward in competing in the Open class this year and am thrilled to be a part of it." Pastrana's co-driver for Pikes Peak will be Michael Fennell, the 1998 SCCA ProRally Co-Driver's Champion.
