Strong finish for Subaru Rally Team USA at Lake Superior ProRally; Subaru awards 2003 Subaru Cup Championship for Subaru Group N entrants.

HOUGHTON, Mich., Oct. 21 -- Subaru Rally Team USA posted strong second and third place finishes at Lake Superior ProRally, the final race of the season in Houghton, Mich. this past weekend. This effort completed the Subaru campaign for the 2003 Manufacturer's Championship resulting in the third place overall finish of Ramana Lagemann and Michael Orr in the Open Class. Subaru also presented the inaugural Subaru Cup Championship award for Subaru Group N entrants to Shane Mitchell who piloted his Subaru WRX to victory taking home the top prize of $25,000.

Time penalties kept SRTUSA out of contention for top honors in Open Class. Subaru teammates Ramana Lagemann and Michael Orr posted a final time of 1:51:37, which earned them second place, while Pasi Hagstrom and co-driver Marko Taskinen finished in third place with a total time of 1:53:05 after receiving a penalty of 3:48.

"This season has been both challenging and emotionally charged, and I am proud of the team's efforts," said James Han, manager, Subaru Rally Team USA. "We've experienced loss and victory in many ways this year and have gone on to achieve competitive results towards the second half of the season."

Subaru established the Subaru Championship Cup, which is a contingency program available to Group N Subaru entrants within the SCCA ProRally Series. With over $65,000 in prize money available to Group N entrants competing in a 2002 or newer Subaru WRX, the Subaru Championship Cup counts the top six points results from eligible competitors with the winner taking a year-end top prize award of $25,000.

This year's hard fought race to win the Subaru Championship Cup came down to the final event on the SCCA ProRally calendar. With both Shane Mitchell and Mark Utecht tied with 40 points each entering the Lake Superior event, the outcome was far from certain. Trouble on the second day of racing at Special Stage nine led Utecht to a DNF result while Mitchell finished the rally 2nd in Class and 10th Overall.
