TOPEKA, Kan. (December 12, 2002) -- SCCA Pro Racing announced today the formation of the new Formula SCCA North American Championship professional open wheel series, utilizing the new SCCA Enterprises formula car.
The series, divided into the Formula SCCA Atlantic and Pacific Tours, will run eight races in each division with one combined championship event, crowning the Formula SCCA North American Champion.
The Formula SCCA Pacific Tour will make its debut at Phoenix International Raceway April 4-6 with a doubleheader event. The series will then run doubleheader events at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, Pacific Raceway Park and one additional track, to be named later.
The Formula SCCA Atlantic Tour will run three events in conjunction with the SPEED World Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway, Mosport International Raceway and Lime Rock Park. The Atlantic Tour will also run events at Gingerman Raceway, BeaveRun Motorsports Complex and Carolina Motorsports Park.
The Formula SCCA North American Championship event for both divisions will be held in October at a venue to be named later.
The new SCCA Enterprises open wheel car features driver skill and cost containment as a focal point. Eliminating the never-ending investment in design enhancements and engine programs, the one design, fixed specification car with minimal adjustments, sealed engines, set horsepower, and equal traction will provide equal competition and controlled costs through standardized components, drive train, adjustments and tires.
